Babies born today with a Deformed one

theboaguy Mar 21, 2006 09:50 PM

Hi All,
today my het female gave birth to some babies (I haven't counted them yet). But it looks like about 5 albinos, 5 hypos, 5 normals One of them is part albino and part normal. It is about 2/3's normal looking and the other 3rd being a big lump and then part albino. Has anybody else seen this before? The baby seems fine. Will it make it? I don't think so. I will post a picture tomorrow.

Sounds like you got a paradox albino with a kink.. I hate to say it but you should put it down if it is a kink.. If it's not a kink and just a belly bulging full of yolk it could be fine.

Homer,
Sooner or latter we all produce a deformed baby snake. I ask myself this question before deciding to put it down. "Would the animal have a chance to survive in the wild with the deformity? (my definition of deformity does not include color or pattern mutations, obviously)" If the answer is yes, it is given a home in my collection and I never breed it. If it would likely be unable to survive with the deformity it gets put down. Fortunatly, I have only had a couple of situations where this decision had to be made. I just don't like to put snakes down if they're not suffering. If I were producing a lot of kinks from a particular pairing I would stop breeding that pair.
Hopefully you will not have to make a decision like that for this snake.

Just my opinion but if the deformed one can live with the problem and eat, shed etc. I would find it a good pet only home....Not everyone is breeding and someone (like me LOL) would love it as it is! I would probably pay a small adoption fee for a pet only boa! But that is just my opinion.
