its been 20yrs...

AsanaCycles Mar 21, 2006 09:53 PM

i was 17-18yo when i was last into herps, and that was 20yrs ago. wow! alot sure has changed. It started on sunday when i picked up a baby gopher snake from the side of the road, and relocated it into a safer area to sun itself in. Suddenly i find myself looking thru a ton of stuff on the internet, and I've found the world of Bloods. As of today, im checking into moving somethings around to accomodate a 421D Boaphile cage. I've got my eye on purchasing a Sumatran Short Tail.
as it is...
i can already see myself wanting a Sumatran and a Blood. Obviously its all about being modular.
i see all these pics of Borneos, Sumatrans, etc...and sometimes they are simply listed as a Blood.
wow!
sensory over load...

wow!
so many Short Tails out there. so the obvious question is...
who's got what for sale?
The Red Bloods are beautiful for the contrast in their coloration, and i like the Sumatran for its, (dare I say?) traditional Burmese-esq markings.
so it seems my eye is attracted to the contrast in the markings.
and wow...i found pics of Albino Reds?

4' Freedom Breeder racks? I'm thinking of getting one, maybe two racks in the next year or so for all the crazy Borneo's I held back. Any input appreciated!

tmrrw i'll be calling boaphile to place an order. like i had said earlier that its been 20yrs since i've been into herps, and now days my resources are a bit deeper, so its a Boaphile 421D for starters. i need to order the whole kit and kaboodle.
i rent a loft/studio so my space is confined, but it will work.
it seem obvious that 2 or 3 of the Boaphile cages would be a pretty good amount of space. i can see me with 2 of the 421D's and maybe something that has 2 cages in that same space.
as i get the cage set up, and everything stabalized, I'll be looking for my new herp.
hmm...
i wonder what will pop up
and this whole bit with shipping has just blown my mind. as a kid i can remember taking Greyhound with my burm in a pillow case, in my back pack. lol that was a trip. especially since it was a late night run, and hardly anyone on the bus, i had a big area in the back to myself where i could let it out some.
anyways...ya...looking foward to the Boaphile system and a STP, i keep leaning towards an albino het blood. (ya right...good luck finding one...right?) we'll see.
the thing is...
that since its been so long since i've had a herp i want to get an animal that is established. the idea of a hatchling...well...all i can say is...i guess at that point it would be up to the Boaphile environment to keep it stable, feel secure, and hopefully it would eat. so im leaning towards finding something about a year old.

bikes....
no i dont have a fixie
i have a Fondriest road bike complete with Zipp's, kysriums, and neutrons guccied out with a bunch of carbon, etc. yada yada yada
Salsa Moto Rapido MTB Crossmax SL, more guccii...
a Bianchi D.I.S.S. MTB single speed, rigid
a Cdale F900 that has been my mainstay, pulls the BOB trailer, has a rack, and panniers.
plus...
an OD GREEN SURLY PUGSLEY
now that is my currrent fav...
i've raced bikes, road races, crits, MTB races, done a ton of Centuries, double centuries, etc. even done a fewl 24hr solo mtb races. of notable worth, placing 4th a few times, which earned me an invite to race at worlds in Canada. however...my personal life fell apart. lol so that mission was scrubbed
and for 1.5yrs i had lived what i call "A Semi-Pro Hobo life" where i only worked 5 days in a row, and had 9 days in a row off. i typically took off down the coast into Big Sur on my MTB with BOB trailer and lived out of my 4 man tipi (www.kifaru.net). Often i'd get into the Ventana Wilderness for a few days.

i was in the army (Ft. Ord, Ca 7th I.D.) 87-91' went to Panama in 89.
now im a pharmacy tech at the local hospital here in Monterey, ca. I tend the ICU, cardiac floor, and more.
i went to UBI (united bicycle institute) in 2000 just for fun.
i do yoga
im a vegetarian
into Buddhism
married twice lol (like everyone needed to know this?)

anyways...
its a Boaphile, and herps now...and again
peace.....d

i have 6 boaphiles, visions, and a couple of cagecrafters that are on loan...visions are the worse in my opinion.

i also have some rack systems by boaphile and by reptilebasics.com

bikes:

scapin road bike
titus racer x,
IF titanium deluxe

i use to have a house full of bikes, but have sold off some stuff

also done some 24 hour racing...snowshoe, tahoe, and moab. no road racing for me, except for a tri, if you want to count that.

hang on tight, i should have some hets...but they will be to small for a 421D.

hre is a shot of my younger albino female with boaphiles in the background. this photo was taken quite some time ago...

Again, that's another beautiful snake! Now that's exactly what I'll be looking for when I get another snake. A young female albino red.

AsanaCycles Mar 23, 2006 01:28 PM

how is it that a 421D would be too big? For the animals psych security, various hide boxes could be provided. ya?
heat...
i assume that the Boaphile system has a temp gradient, ya?
so the hide boxes, upside down terracota (whatever) could be placed in different spots along that gradient? ya?
oh...
and how do we deal with humidity? i've read upteen things, like peatmoss, etc, sprayed down with water, and of course, the water bowl.
would an adult STP live comfortably in a 421D?
could i have 2 STP's live in one 421D? that is...of course until they get too big, and/or when they start to want to do their reproducing gig (how ever that works).

mega questions...

if you have a hatchling, then they can feel overwhelmed in a really big enclosure. shoe boxes work great for hatchings, and as they grow you can move up sterilite/rubbermaid containers.

i have some snakes that are around 40 inches, that seem to be happy in 40 quart sterilite tubs.

i may move these particular snakes up to the boaphiles...but not just yet.

When I get another snake, I want one like that albino red female you have. She looks perfect! Great size, awesome colors! That's exactly what I want in a blood python!

Where could I find a snake like that (preferably a sexed female hatchling), and approximately how much do they usually go for?

AsanaCycles Mar 22, 2006 08:26 PM

so im researching a TON. and its obvious that the world has evolved. now i read that herps are being fed frozen thawed mice, rats, etc. so i go to rodent pro and see you can buy a bag of frozens. ummm...
exactly how does this work? i mean...
do you just thaw the food out, let sit and maybe warm with some warm water? I've never known a snake to eat something dead. except the florida speckled king i had when i was kid, and it would eat lizards that i'd shoot with my pelet gun. lol
that was a long time ago.
feeding frozes is a huge leap foward. no more depending on local breeders, parasites, etc. Not to mention the risk of injury.

Yep. You got it. Leave em out overnite, or on a sunny patio for a couple of hours and youre good to go. Make sure they are completely thawed. To induce a better feeding response (if needed) you can heat f/t'd over light bulb or other heat source. Its a whole lot easier and better than the "old days".
Welcome back!

so of course i have a TON of snake stories.
I was born in 68' in Fresno
my dad a vietnam vet/hippie my mom a filipino WAC.
so there in Fresno, my had all kinds of snakes, an alligagotor snapping turtle, fish, etc.
his buddy (Chuck) from when they were teens (early 60's) in Ventura had his own Pet Store buis. Pet & Basket. from what i know...this is really how the things started.
anyways....
Fresno...
There we are living on Yale in Fresno and house has this Sweedish Loft style studio in the back, where my dad has turned it into an art studio/herp get away. The place is full of aquariums, etc. Of the snakes my dad has, is this 8ft redtail boa.
well...being the counter-culture warrior my dad was, something had happened where he had to go to jail for 30 days. so there my mom is, with 2 kids, me being in kindergarten, a house full of animals, and these snakes in the studio. my mom doesnt want to have a thing to do with them. So pop tries his best to set things up, so the snakes can survive the time he's in the joint.
well...Rosie (the redtail) busts out of her cage, and out the TOP of the studio thru a hole broken in the glass. she then procedes into the plum orchard next door. where our retired neighbor goes out one day to pick plums, and finds her living in one of his trees! he calls the cops, they call the Fresno Zoo, and the News shows up to film it all.
you know...
"live at 5, boa constrictor caught by Fresno Zoo, in local neighborhood"
all the while, my mom is keeping us kids inside, and i kind of dont realize what is going on out there.
the news comes on, and im thinking...hmmm...that looks like next door...and....that looks like Rosie.
turns out...
my dad is in the joint, and sees this whole thing.
he comes home...and sure enough...Rosie is gone.
so its my pop out of the joint, to Rosie being picked up and placed in the joint.
so we'd go there every so often, and visit.

thats my first snake related story...i was 5.

peace....d
