kingman Jul 28, 2003 06:21 PM

This is the male. He is really red, I have heard him called hypo and everything else. Pretty nice looking though.

this is the female that I have for him. Really light looking true hogg island girl

Let me know what you think of these two.

The first one looks like a Hypo or Hypo//Hogg cross. Check out the pics of all my Hoggs at this link.

I can see why he has been called a "hypo". Are you sure they both are not crosses? Irregardless they are both beautiful!

Simbo Jul 28, 2003 08:05 PM

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get them from? I think they look more like hypos, but that is just my opinion. Nice looking boas regardless. Good luck with them!

Nice looking boas, but definitely not Hoggs.

kingman Jul 28, 2003 08:47 PM

I have seen a couple of hypo*hogg crosses and none showed up this red.

I have seen some pure hoggs by a Greg or Gary Walsch that were red, he called them fire or something like that.

But in any case that male is wild.

RedInTheTail Jul 28, 2003 10:03 PM

You said that male is wild, I assume you mean wild caught. The importation of hoggs stopped years ago and they are thought to be extinct in the wild. There is NO way that is WC. No offense, but you better check your sources bro.

RedInTheTail Jul 28, 2003 10:07 PM

salmon hypo crossed with hogg island BCI without a doubt. Also known as mutts LOL.

mrcanada21 Jul 29, 2003 07:33 AM

If you breed two snakes of the same subspecies you get a purebred, not a mutt. You may disagree with breeding animals that have regional colour and size differences but that my friend doesn't make a mutt or a crossbreed. I'm sure some people will disagree but thats an argument for the taxonomists, not me. BTW, calling someones animals a MUTT doesn't seem very friendly to me when there are words that better discribe what your saying.

East TN Reptile Jul 29, 2003 09:23 AM

Do you have Hypo boas? The 1st Hypo was a central American bio...does that make em mutts? Hogs And Colombian boas are both BCI.
I produced Hypo x Hog Isle
s last year. They were extremley outstanding. If ya don't like a cross, that's more than fine. Using the term "mutt" does not settle very well with me. Let's all get along & play nicely. This forum is for showing animals your proud of & obtaining info.not for snide remarks only cause you don't like crosses. IMO
Does the snake in this pic look ugly or muttish to you? Dave

JDouglas Jul 29, 2003 10:30 AM

What percent hog is that? Is it 50/50? I don't ussually like crosses but I like your hypo hog crosses . I think the hog/normal bci or bcc crosses are not very appealing. IMO

poosphere Jul 29, 2003 10:31 AM

I personally "prefer" locality specific animals but do not have any gripes with morphs, crosses, whatever. Awesome snake ya' got there!

AbsoluteApril Jul 29, 2003 11:05 AM

I call them locality mutts, but I don't mean disrespect or
to imply the animals are of less quality... how about if
we call them locality crosses? There has to be a term for
it but people get all offended by the word mutt for some reason?

poosphere Jul 29, 2003 12:23 PM

I think some people find that term sort of condescending or insulting. Maybe because it makes the snake sound inferior, who knows. I guess it's not "poltitically correct". Many people who are against crosses use the term in a derogatory fashion, thus the reaction from people to take it personally. In any case, I believe it has become a term that is associated with an unfriendly meaning and probably would be best avoided.

tcdrover Jul 29, 2003 03:36 PM

"People who are easily offended deserve to get offended".

Kidding aside, I guess a lot of people post pics of their pets
because they like them, not necesarily because they want them
to be looked at with a critical eye.

I'm POSITIVE that whoever sold or advertised them as pure Hogs is going to be 'offended' by the term mutt. I don't find it
offensive, I find it a little unsettling dealing with hyper-sensitivity and the whole 'Political Correctness' thing though.

You are right about hogs being extinct but I am sure he meant "wild" as in cool, awesome, killer, etc...

I know that their are no more Hogg Island Boas in the wild. I also am trying to purchase a pair of adult 100% hoggs that are from the original sears line.

As far as the cross I still am trying to figure out where the large amount of red is coming from. The other Hypo Hogg crosses look sweet, but still don't have this insane amount of red. Most of the time he is almost pure red.
