Need Pics and Analysis of Land to Water Declines

Spar Jul 28, 2003 06:46 PM

I am about to put together a Paludarium (75 gallon) and would like to see how people have done their land declines into the water. Baby Box Turtles will be the land animal in this setup, so something other than a drop off will be necessary. I was thinking of a stair case decline, but would rather do a sloping decline. Please post any pics of your setup or even pics of the building process to aid me in this step. Thank you.

Hi,

You can check out the "how to" on my site. There is a picture of my finished tank in the post right after this one.

When I built my tank I didn't use any fixative to hold the wood terraces in place. I think that if you are housing box turtles in the tank that they would quickly dig up and demolish anything held together without a type of glue. Who knows, it may work!

One thing I worry about is the filtration system if you try to do something naturalistic. Turtles poop A LOT and they LOVE to "go" in the water. Having a simple water dish, or even a shallow litter box full of water is not as decorative, but its a heck of a lot easier to clean! I have 2 russians and a Bell's hingeback. They live in an outside enclosure in the summer, and a large, plastic bottom rabbit cage in the winter. They are MESSY little buggers, but really cute. (The russians are 16 and 10 years old, the Bell's is a WC, unknown age).

Just my 2 cents...

Good Luck,
Kelly

One more thing... I have built another tank for my water-dragon. I cut a piece of plexiglass and sealed it with aquarium sealant to separate the tanks. I used a power filter to keep the water clean and it seems to be working very well! (He's been in it for about 3 months).

If you wanted to do this for your little turtles I would make it MUCH more shallow than I did (probably about 2 inches deep) and have many large rocks for them to use to push themselves out of the water with.

I still HIGHLY recommend the water dish idea, but live and learn right? We only learn new things by trying new things right?

Good Luck!
