Drip System?

Grunngg Mar 22, 2006 06:43 PM

I'm curious about a drip system. I hear not only do they provide another water source, but they also help with humidity a bit.
How do I set one up? Do I buy a system? Someone once told me I can make one buy poking a pin hole in a water bottle and sitting on top of the screen lid. Any of you guys have some experience? Thanks.

i cant really see it helping humidity much, but they are commonly used for chameleons.
not sure what your planning to use it for, but there is no sense in buying one.
simply find a plastic container you would like to use and poke a small hole in it. you can get a valve and some tubing if you want to be able to adjust the rate of dripping and direct where your drips go.

I have a pair of Tokay Geckos. They dont really drink from a dish, mainly water driplets. I figured the drips would help keep a source of water availible between mistings. I also was hoping the humidity would be raised, even slightly.

well it will deffinately help them with the drinking aspect, but i cant really see it helping the humidity.
if you want to raise humidity and your willing to invest more i would suggest either a humidifier or a misting system.

Drip systems can work wonders when it comes to increasing humidity. They key is to have a substrate that sort of "distributes" the droplets throughout the cage by capillary action. Then you have to adjust the flow rate so the amount of water going in is about equal or slightly greater than the evaporation rate.

Works wonders if you have it setup right.

i wasnt aware that it would be possible to have a drip system increase humidity due to the small amount of water being used (usualy). good thing to know, thank you.

It's hardly the most efficient way, but it does work for certain types of enclosures. And it's pretty cheap.

Ultrasonic humidifers are probably the most efficient, but also pretty expensive.

A drip system will provide the water for the animals, but a mist system will also effect humidity as well as the water dropplets you are looking for.

Systems are easy to find, Patrick Nabors at saurian sells one as do most other dart frog suppliers. However it is easy to make your own.

I recommend you get a high quality pump like the ones supplied at saurian.net. Most of them come from a company called ecologic (cloudtops.com) they sell directly to the consumer and the price is not bad, but a little steep for most people.

The pumps are high quality and worth the money I believe they can even run dry a nice safety.

Anyways Hope that helped.
Good Luck

I use a rain system for my Varanus prasinus pair. With a system like this make sure your enclosure is water tight. I used FRP to accomplish this. Rain system keeps humidty up and I control the amount of moisture added as well as the duration.

Definetely a great looking set up. What are the dimensions on it?

Thanks, the enclosure is 7'6" tall 5' long and 3' deep

chris_harper2 Mar 23, 2006 10:57 AM

Very nice.

How big is the sliding door area? What track did you use and how well is it working?

They look pretty large, over half of the 7'6" height you mentioned. Maybe the camera angle is misleading.

chris_harper2 Mar 24, 2006 08:26 AM

Thanks. What brand of roller slides? I'm wanting to try those for my next project.
