Need advice on a thayeri........

TobyEKing Mar 22, 2006 07:57 PM

Ok guys here goes, This thayeri was purchased as a non-feeder so I knew what I was getting into. Ive had him about 4 months. The first three I was force feeding him about every 7-10 days a small pink. Each time before force feeding I would try and see if he would eat on his own. Finally he did a scented pink, gobbled it right down. Next day he regurges. And this has been going on the past 4 feeding. He eats all on his own then the next day regurges. He is set up just like the rest of my thayeri same temps everything. Just looking to you guys for suggestions.

If a snake regurges, you have to wait at least a week or two before attempting again. It's hard on their system and feeding too quickly only makes things worse.

Wait a week or two if you can and dip the pinky in some tuna juice.

just my opinion

Try using Nutri-Bac. It is a powder you sprinkle on the food item and it restores the snakes natural stomach bacteria. I have used it and it is a great product. I have not bought any in years but I think I got it from an ad in Reptiles Magazine.

Aron is right, Nutribac is a good product but even using Nutribac I'd recommend giving that little thayeri only 1/2 of a pink so it can digest the food item more easily. Sometimes snakes are born with digestive tracks that are either not well suited for the job or just plain don't function as well as the clutchmates. When a food item is being digested it gives off gases and I've seen on occassion a snake with a bulbous lump 2 days after feeding. It was gas...and in another day or so it was gone. I believe this can make a snake regurge if the stomach lining is not ready to expand with the gases. Typically I give a snake 14-20 days after regurging to allow it to settle itself before feeding again....otherwise I think you are asking for problems.

My 2 cents and if you want Nutribac you can get it from Fowler Foods.

Thanks guys any info I can get helps. I really would hate to lose this guy. I had troublesome feeders before but NONE have been as bad as this one. It is just hard to understand why when force feed he would keep it down....now that he is eating on his own he regurges. I must say that it is a good test for my patience.

I gave this young boy about 10-12 days before tring to feed him again. This time I just offered him a pinkie head and he ate it and has kept it down. I guess Ill just keep feeding him heads until he looks like he is wanting more. Thanks for all the advice guys. It really is nice to have a place to come to and get tips and tidbits of info to help out.
