MMEGI (Gaberones, Botswana) 21 March 06 The day the boys killed the python (Bame Piet and Tsele Tsebetsame)
Monday was a bad day for business at Court Yard Lodge in Kumakwane when an unexpected and unusual guest - python - paid a visit. A security officer said his suspicions were raised when chickens begun running around.
When he went to check, he found the snake trying to kill one of the chickens. He went to call for help but when he came back, the python had already eaten some of the chickens. Villagers rescued the situation before Botswana Defence Force (BDF) snake-handlers could be called. They manhandled the snake and put it under control. The owner of the lodge, Tlhomamiso Kebaswele said pythons have caused him trouble in the past but the police and BDF always ignore him. He said he has lost many chickens to the snakes. He lost customers in yesterday's incident as some of them relocated. Superintendent Andrew Bosilong of Thamaga Police said that maybe when Kebaswele sought help, he spoke to an inexperienced officer. He said they are not trained to handle snakes and they usually call the BDF to assist.
