My in-laws have about a 2 month old sulcata hatchling. He still had his egg tooth when they got him, which amazed me! Anyway, they knew nothing about tortoises when they got him, and the only ones I really know about are Russians. I directed them to a couple of websites so that they could learn to properly care for him (one of them being Tutle Homes). I have seen him approximately every two weeks since they got him. When I saw him yesterday, I looked at his plastron, and noticed that it was very sunken in along both sides next to the split thing that runs down the middle. It looks horrible and scary. She has kept him well fed and watered, he is on a solid flat surface, so it shouldn't be from forming from his home. What is this?! It alarmed me so much that I said if it was my tortoise, I would either find someone who knows about them, and ask about it, or take it to the vet the very next day! Also, his shell doesn't feel very hard to me. It's not exactly soft, but it does give push in when you press on it, with very light pressure. It sounds to me like possibly a feeding problem, but I really have no idea, having never had a hatchling tortoise before. If it were mine, I would have researched it before it got to this point. Anyway, any help would be great. Please email me directly at jasmarbell@juno.com as I probably won't get a chance to do anything on the internet but check my email for the next few day.
