balls with no dad?

414reptiles Mar 23, 2006 10:58 AM

okay maybe my topic line is a little vague but listen to this. Last year I met a local guy who had some snakes for sale. okay nothing unsual about that right. Well I bought 3 snakes from him and as he was telling me the story later on about one of the snakes i bought...i was so confused lol. He inherited an old female ball which was about 20 years old...thats cool by it self but as he kept telling me the history... the only males he had in his collection was an adult 50% het pied and a pastel who was too young to breed. Getting to the point he had her for about 2 years by her self and the only time a male (50% het) was exposed to her was on cage cleaning days. He never noticed a lock up and they werent left together for long periods of time... well one day he goes to take care of her and she was laying on a clutch! He never noticed a lock up and he gets eggs?...if the 50% is not the dad do you think its possible that she self replicated? lol The babies came out super orange too. His pastel male matured for this season and she should be laying his babies soon, im so excited to see what these babies look like.

think i have freak babies or a 25% het pied? lol...any one else have weird stories like that? The snake was sold to me as a normal for a reasonable price so his story was not for financial gain...I just love thinking about this lol .. I think im going to check my girls for eggs.. I didnt breed this season so i might have a clutch :P lol

The details of that story sound familiar. Kevin's "Lava's"? Just curious. More on topic with your question...from what I've heard/read, it has happened on occasion. Gotta respect Mother Nature, huh?

yeah it does sound alot like kevins lava's Where did you come across the story? was it kevin? lol Man i love that snake

On the rare occasion the immaculate conception story occurs in balls - generally they lay a bunch of slugs and maybe all but one or two eggs die during incubation - usually the offspring (again usually only one or two) turns out to be female. No one seems to have run a DNA test on these suckers yet - so it's hard to back up these stories.

Also - if he inherited a 20 year pet - theres no telling what the snake could have been doing before he got it. Possibly a sperm retention thing.

tosha love the new picture in your signature lol .... sperm retension for 20 years though? I know it's possible for a season or maybe more... but 20 years?...thats stretching it. Can you imagine sperm just laying around that long? lol it wasn't my snake so I didn't experience it...is this a big-foot story of the snake world? lol I love to believe it I just can't wait to see the outcome of the next clutch. Either way i still talk to the guy because we swap snake story's and pictures. He's cool as hell hopefully we can prove that "lava strain" next year lol You really do have to see them in person I love them. Even if they prove normal i love looking at them. Thats besides the point lol i just want to know if any one has experienced this before

Yeah Tosha, great picture!

LOL - yeah - if you google "crazy Frog" you'll see that there are a lot of sites that have the Axel F video - there are also a lot of sites that have downloadables and stuff too. He just hasn't made it big in the US - so he's hard to find local. My kids love it when his videos come on Cartoon network! They've got the DVDs and stuffed animals and a bunch of crazy frog stuff (my ex lives in Australia and ships it over).
