HELP Shipping collareds

platinumtlc Mar 23, 2006 05:10 PM

Help please
I want to ship my 2 collareds from New Jersey to Oregon. I go to school in Oregon and I am going home to NJ for spring break next week. This gives me the opportunity to package them right and send it out (otherwise my mom would have to do it and she doesnt hold them). SO while I'm in NJ i want to package them and ship them overnight, like the day I leave, so they will be there a day after I arrive.

I have heard that UPS and FedEx do it but they have to approve you? how long does it take?

And I also heard that Delta Dash is another option.

What do I do? I went to http://www.arbreptiles.com/shipping/index.shtml and I have a basic idea.
But I don't know if I need a heat pack or cold pack or neither?
I want to order whichever I need so when I get home I can just put everything together and not have to worry about waiting for something to come in.

I have 2 collared lizards that I want to bring back with me to my dorm.

PLEASE HELP! DETAILS APPRECIATED!

I don't have any experience shipping collareds, but I do have experience traveling with them. Is carrying them with you out of the question? I'd trust myself before I'd entrust them to UPS, that's for sure.

Sorry for not including your other questions. Ups you do need to be approved, and must make a sample shipping box fo rthem and sent it to them , and they will make sure it's right, and you know the proper way to pack. Fed Ex you must be a company /petshop to be able to ship live lizards.

I use DHL you also must sign a paper with htem saying you will need to ship live animals.

Delta dash costs a MINT as opposed to the others.

If it's extremely cold use heat pack, if it were above 80 use cold pack

I forgot waht else you asked so if I fail to answer everything , LOL sorry !

hey thanks.

For my situation, what is the quickest way to get them shipped if I am going to be home next week?

AND yes many people have told I should bring them on the plane with me, but I haven't gotten any concrete answers on if they would be allowed as a carryon? I worry that if I put them in my backpack, it would go thru the machine security thing and they would see 2 lizards? Is that crazy? Or would they let it pass? UGH I was even told by a friend to try it and if they didnt let me through they would take them back for me. I want to bring them on the plane with me but I am afraid I will get the whole airport on lockdown or something!!?

trying to sneak them on a plane can get them taken from you

they won't let you take them as carry on because they are considered a threatening and dangerous animal. i found one airline that would allow iguanas but only iguanas. even if they let you take them as carry on you would have to get them both certified from a vet that they were healthy to fly.

your best bet is to put the lights on timers and pay a pet sitter to come over several times that week to feed them.

putting them in a kennel is no good because even if they would take them, most require that you bring enough food for the time you are gone and the crickets might die.

USPS in la mesa, ca would allow me to ship lizards and the post office in myrtle beach, sc allowed me to ship them back. just call the place where you would need to ship them from and see if they will do it

I don't need anyone to watch them
They are at home in NJ, I go to school in Oregon.
I am going to NJ for spring break during which at that time i want to prepare them and ship them to Oregon.
So when I get back to oregon, they will arrive like the next day.

sorry i misunderstood that. i thought you were trying to fly them home since you were going out of town. either way i still don't recommend sneaking them onto a plane.

i got the thing below from http://pe.usps.gov/text/dmm300/601.htm#wp1103548 it doesn't say anything about lizards if the USPS tries to deny you. they told me i had to write the name of the species on the outside of the box, other than that it wasn't a big deal

Thanks!

But how do the heat/cold packs work? How am I supposed to know if the temps will go up or down during the trip? Its going across the country so I'm assuming it will vary? I don't know!

platinumTLC Mar 28, 2006 12:53 PM

?? anyone know about them?

PHEve Mar 29, 2006 07:29 AM

If it's 60 degrees or above I would not bother using any heat at all they will be fine. If it is 85 or above use cold. Over 100 I hold off. (you will not have that problem NOW

If it is under 60 degrees use the heat pack. Wrap the heat pack in paper towels or a piece of newspaper DO NOT allow heat or cold pack to come into contact with the container you have the lizard in. Put some packing along side the container and then on the outer side next to box side put your WRAPPED heat/cold pack (so as it is NOT touching your lizard container.

UNDERSTAND that part? If not ask me again it is very important not to allow packs to come in contact. Any other questions give me a holler
