How much should I feed my red foot tortoise?

shorty333 Jul 28, 2003 07:51 PM

I have a red foot tortoise. He is getting bigger and heavier already and I've had him for only a month. I've read that I should feed him every other day and people have told me to feed him everyday. I'm not sure what the truth is. Does anybody know how much and how often I should feed my pet red foot?

Feed him 3 times a week as much as he will eat in one sitting, or as Mike Pingleton does in his book on Redfoot's, 2 days on 2 day off.

It really depends on sizem, I feed all my hatchling torts daily and as my turtles get older I feed them every feed days.

This is an impossible question to answer.
There are individual differences in addition to the fact that it is almost entirely based on environmental conditions.
If the animal is growing in normal proportions and there is no sign of any kind of imbalance, rate should not even be considered.
I've got tortoises that grow noticably quicker than others in the same group and there are many factors that could be the reason.
As to the amount you should feed... Let the tortoise decide. I feed more than they can eat. In the case of greens, I just leave it there until it is gone and then feed again. This sometimes takes a day or 2 and sometimes longer. The mazuri is the only stuff I take out after they have eaten their share.
