female Bloods mating?

chaoscat Mar 23, 2006 10:07 PM

We recently got in 0.1 adult red blood and 1.1 adult black bloods. Put them together temporarily last night, and the "female" black blood was mating with the red blood female-penetration and all. This morning, the male black blood was copulating with the red female.

Is it normal for female bloods to "play around"???

Sounds like you have two male blacks...Red/Black hybrids are not the prettiest thing, although it rarely occurs in the wild, if my memory is correct.

Thanks Rich. I was told that it's "normal" for females to evert scent glands inside other females and that made absolutely no sense.

I probed all my bloods/blacks/borneos last night and all of them probed male, that can't be right. Out of 10 2 year olds, 3 year olds and adults, I have mostly males?

Just interested in the probe depths that you obtained. Female bloods probe deeper than females of other python species and can easily probe well over an inch. I have had a few adult females that probed as deep as 1.5 inches. This is over half the depth of a male of the same size, and can easily be confusing to someone not familiar with probing bloods. I have seen "experts" probe adult females and sell them as males on several occasions.

The probes went almost all the way up the tail in my case. Not sure if someone probed them before me and damaged them, or what.

over 2 inches, then they are definitely males. This of course is if the probe was used gently by the previous owners, and not forced through the tissue at the end of the pocket. This is sometimes done with females by the inexperienced. Always probing both sides is a good way of checking also.

Kelly and Rich are better experts than I, but if they have been damaged I think if you use a slightly larger probe you have a better chance of reaching the appropriate depth for the animal. Also check both sides like Kelly said.
