Which type of turtle would not ....

pfan151 Mar 24, 2006 09:35 AM

totally destroy my plants? I have a 10'x10' indoor pond, and I would like to get a few turtles. I have quite a bit of various type of plants in the pond and would like some ideas for my best options. I don't mind if they eat a little, I just don't want to end up with nothing.

I'm jealous! A 10' by 10' indoor pond?! That's great. I'd stick with something small if I were you. You could get a charming little turtle that may nibble on your plants, but won't destroy them. Any turtle that gets large enough could destroy your plants, even if they don't eat them. I'd get a CB Spotted turtle or several. They're great little turtles, and they aren't really large enough to damage plants by grazing or otherwise. Other turtles to consider are any of the North American mud/musk turtles. They are nearly strictly carnivorous and also stay small. With a pond that size, you could start a nice breeding colony of Spotted turtles. Just make sure that you place a special full spectrum UVA/UVB bulb within the recommended distance over a basking spot regardless of the type of turtle you get.

This is the result of years of planning...

Ken, your picture is not showing.

Original poster, I am not sure what type of turtle would not destroy your plants. I have 3 RES and they love destruction! I stopped buying plants for my tank as they love to cut them up and make a huge mess. I do buy DUCK WEED now for them. THey eat it as well and they love how it covers the top of the tank.
