Maximum size of Panther Chams...?

Chamcham505 Mar 24, 2006 09:48 PM

Well, I was having a little chat with a friend of mine () about the length of Panther chams. Cobalt, is nearly twenty inches, snout to tip of tail.

Now, Ive heard that 1.) CB are usually much smaller than WC's.
2.) The full body length greatly varies.

I'd just like to know if Cobalt is a little Shrimpy, or if he's considered the average length for a panther cham. Just wanted to clear things up, and know an average 'estimate' of body length, and Thanks- as always.

From what I have read, 21 inches is about the biggest that males can get. Different color morphs seem to be able to attain different sizes as adults with ambanjas generally being the biggest. Its all kind of general though, because, just like people, chameleons grow to different sizes as adults.

I have also heard that CB's are smaller than WC's, but I have had a couple of CB's that are huge.

I wouldn't say that Cobalt sounds shrimpy!

feeniee Mar 25, 2006 12:06 AM

Colbalt is not a shrimp!! LOL. Lou is 18 inches total and Yosamite is 22. Yosamite has filled out nicely, while Lou is still kinda lanky, like a 15 year old kid I'm sure he'll start to fill out here in the next few months!!

man, my veiled is 1 year old nad he is only 13"

Is THAT shimpy? I definitely want him to max out...I love big chams and im jealous of you guys!

Anything I can do to make him grow bigger? Is there any correlation with slow/lack of growth rate with not feeding enough ?

Hehehe Michele! ()

Thought it would be neat to see who has the largest panther chameleon! post up your accurate sizes, Snout to Tail tip. No need to be shy, maybe we can figure out if there are factors.

Well, we know who's winnig so far- FEENIE, with her 22 in gorgeous Yosamite. Than comes Cobalt at a huge, whopping 19 3/4 inch. ( JK- I still think he's on the small side.) Than comes Lou, who is 18 in.-and I might add he is still young and growing, so technically- that puts Cobalt in last place. So, Will...how big is that panther of yours?!

I dont even think hes in the running! and he eats as much as he wants and more! He does get some exercise though.... IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

feeniee Mar 25, 2006 11:14 AM

that's why My boys are big? NO exercise!! No Little mammacita's to chase around! Yosamite is a little beef. He mostly chills out, won't chase a cricket, but loves his silkies!! He has a huge head too...between 8-9 inches svl, Lou is just a slinky guy 7-8 svl.. His head is alot smaller than Sams, so I'm not expecting him to get much bigger...He does have a long strong tail and big long toes on his feet Stitch is 14 inches total, but he probably weighs a much as Yosamite... Rana won't be still long enough for me to measure...

This is fun!! Anyone else have the lengths on their chams

I will have to measure some of my chams later and get some lengths to post. But as for weight, Goliath is by far my biggest. He is 248 grams. Although he won't have a big length because his tail was nipped as a baby, so it is about an inch shorter than it should be. I will post some lengths soon....

Ok, I just measured a bunch of my chams. Most of the males seem to be 15-17 total length.

He is a very pretty cham!

WillHayward Mar 25, 2006 10:01 PM

At 10.5 months old, Jerkface here, is 15.5" long from nose to tail tip. I thought I read that Tamataves were the largest, althought now when I attempt to quote it, I can't find my source!!

I was just discussing this with Tyler the other night. We have these big huge breeder males and then we wind up having to get 5 to 6 females before we find one that can mate with our males. She lays a nice cutch of eggs and then dies before laying her second clutch.

WillHayward Mar 25, 2006 10:47 PM

Chaco, I was hoping one of the bigger breeders would post about this. I can only imagine the torment you must be going through trying to reproduce massive panthers.

Do you have any length measurements from nose to tail tip?

Yeah I forgot to give his measurements. The guy above is Zeus and Ambanja Panther and he has grown a little more. He is 24 1/2 inches and 272 grams. The guy pictures here is Chaco, he is kind of a skinny boy. He is 22 inches and about 180 grams.

WillHayward Mar 25, 2006 11:11 PM

Now that IS a big panther chameleon. Are you sure Zeus wasn't mated with a Parsons a few generations back???!

Looks like he holds the record so far. Any reason you think he his so large? WC?

I took Zeus into a local reptile only pet shop a couple of months back. He was looking around strutting his stuff when all of the sudden he caught sight of "Doc" a 32 inch Mellers. You should have seen him melt. He turned almost white and was looking for a place to hide.

My last big Panther: This is Azul he is a Wild Caught Nosy Be that is exactly 20 inches. That is really big for a Nosy Be.

FEENIEE Mar 26, 2006 01:01 AM

Lou Bears Daddy!!!! Now I know where Lou gets his looks from!! I read somewhere that crossbreeds don't get as large as pure breds ? I think it has to do with genes. Lou is a "skinny" guy, but so was Yosamite... Now Yosamite eats twice a day.. 4 Large silkies in the A.M. and 4 or 5 in the p.m. He gets mid-day snacks of whatever I have on hand, kingworms, hornworms, crickets, butterworms, ect... When his lights first come on the morning.. he's waiting for food. Now Lou and Stitch are not such eager eaters. Lou eats about 4-6 silkies and a few snacks every other day and Stitch eats when he feels like it.. He's gone as long as 5 days without eating, then all of a sudden he's Mr. Big Manly Hunter, and will eat anything in sight! I have to be careful when cleaning Yosamites cage, any loose clothing.. necklaces, or earrings can be confused for food. He's gone after my draw-strings on a hooded sweater I was wearing one time, my four-leaf clover necklace...eyeballed my hoop-earrings one time.. He'll eyeball my chihuahua Jose when he walks in the room
Now, the babies are eating like mad. Mrs. Lou is an avid hunter and will find any and all crickets and flies in her cage. She'll take silkies with nooo problems! As for the little boy (no name yet) He's got a bad attitude and is really lazy. He'll wait for the food to come to him. He won't lift a finger to catch a crickets, but he's all over the silkies that I give him. He's still really skittish and will puff up and hiss at me, so I don't bother him much except for food and water time. He's such a little cutie when he thinks no one is watching..

And of course I can't forget my Rana... She's always hungry! But her strick diet and exercise routines have kept her healthy and egg free so far!! Here is a pic I took of her the other day while I was cleaning her cage.. I couldn't believe how much she looked like Stitch

Yes, that's Lou's father! Azul is my best producing Panther ever. He and his mates have produced hundred of Panthers. He doesn't look like that anymore. He is around 6 now and he is slowing down. When you look at him in the face, he looks like an old man. His tongue doesn't work anymore but he is still a good eater. I think he is going to pass on sometime this year.

I saw a picture of Rana down below. She is just a beautiful little girl. She is from Tyler right? Gaia's daughter?

chaco Mar 26, 2006 02:05 AM

Feeniee, I forgot to tell you that my pet sitter has fallen on hard times and I bought back a couple of Chams that I sold to her. I have Lou's brother back now. I'll try and get some pictures of him. I don't think he is as pretty as Lou and he is on the small side.

Wow, he's already 6! He's probably one happy cham!
I would love to see Pics of Lou's brother! I'm curious about the color and how the others siblings came out. Do you ever see any pics of the others?

Oh and yes, Rana is from Gaia. I'm still mad at Tyler for not letting me have Gaia, but I love Rana too!! Her Color Range is more instense then Stitch's sometimes.. It's pretty cool!

I really think the average length for Panther males is about 17 inches. Several of my breeeders have been 17 or less. This is the biggest Veiled I have ever had. Big O is gone now but he was 21 1/2 inches and 260 grams.

Thanks Adam. No I don't have a web site any longer. I had a web site with a PayPal interface but it wasn't working the way I wanted it to so I took it down. With the PayPal interface, just anybody could come along and buy a Panther Chameleon. I didn't like that because they hadn't done their research.

Zeus has gotten so big now and he is not as nice as he was when he was younger. I don't mean temperment he has always been accepting of handling. Here is a picture when he was about 8 months old and he has a lot of nice tourquoise color. Now a lot of the tourquoise is gone and has been replaced by white.
It used to be when he fired up, his eyes were like headlights, he was spectacular but not anymore.

WillHayward Mar 27, 2006 01:00 AM

Enh, we all age and get old. At least he doesn't have to worry about hair loos on top of colour loss.

Hes got great reds, With a blue-stong female the offspring could be wild. Any photos of his children?
