My 500 gram male is breeding. I never checked for sperm plugs. I just tried him out and he bred.
If a male breeds, is he definitely producing sperm? I assume "yes", but I don't want to pop him and bother him to find out for sure. Does anyone know?

Didn't bother to check for sperm plugs??? If he's breeding ,does that mean he's producing sperm ???? You ASSUME???? Please Don't take offense , but you should never assume anything.....especially when your breeding living animals .Before even thinking about breeding animals BOTH animals should be of optimum weight , health , and sexual maturaty . Otherwise you are WASTING ALOT OF TIME and risking (wasting) a female on most likely producing bad eggs (duds).Above all ....if you're breeding animals , you should know the answers to the questions you've asked , or you have no business "Trying him out" . Just trying to save you some heartache by being honest . Sorry if I sound harsh....good luck .

I've often thought that adding, "Not trying to be harsh, but...", "I was only raised to be honest." or other such comments are often excuses people use to be rude. There is almost ALWAYS a better wat to say something if it's going to come across as "Harsh" or rude. Just my opinion

he wouldn't breed if he wasn't producing sperm....according to a bigger breeder than I....if they have the urge they are ready....says they are actually ready before they actually think about it or do it..........
personally.I have never actually "checked" for sperm ......why would you need to????..I don't palpate for follicles or eggs either......they are either in there or not..you can tell by watching what females are doing.........
and if they are not what could we do?..magic spell to create follicles?.........

you think????
It doesn't hurt to try him out....he may produce, he may not....if you want to know for sure if he's producing sperm...check and see. I had a male breed at 420 grams and produce just fine. I didn't check for plugs or anything...I just had 2 extra females and so I just tossed him in. As long as he's healthy and actually trying to breed and not acting stress its all good. I wouldn't necessary recommend it to most because every snake is different....but its your call....its not my snake to tell you what to do with it.

Breeding a 500 gram male is OK, I had a male pastel last season that was around 420 grams that produced three clutches. Here were the results.
Clutch #1 ... 12 eggs.... 8 pastels and 4 normals
Clutch #2 ... 4 eggs.... 3 pastels and 1 normal
Clutch #3 ... 3 eggs.... 3 pastels and 0 normals
That is pretty good odds for a 420 gram male.
I have had males that were under 400 breed this season so we will see what the out come is. Hope that helps.

Great looking Cinnamon you have there.
Hopefully he passes all of that blushing onto his offspring.
Good Luck.

A 500 gr male without sperm plugs could very well give you slugs, not all small males are ready, some do some don't...
Good luck
If a female is developing follicles she may reabsorb them if no sexual activity is encountered (among other things). But if you place her with a young male and they begin breeding you could end up with slugs. This would be a huge waste of your female.
Even though younger males may produce sperm, they produce less of it (when compared to a larger male). So, not all eggs may become fertilized. Also, a breeding male will often go off feed when breeding. So if you were hoping to get him up to a more adequate size, it may not happen. I have an article on my web site about breeding younger males.
Too many people are in a rush. Remember, it's about the journey, not the destination.
