how long to adjust to mealies?

bbrandonsmom Mar 25, 2006 06:53 AM

Approximately how long does it take a gecko to adjust to a new food and when to start becoming concerned? All of our geckos always ate mealies great. When we brought our bell home we just happend to pick up some crickets-we feed them every so often. Well she looked at them like she didn't know what they were, but after a day or so ate a few. Now that there is a bowl of mealies in her tank, she won't eat them. She's gone and licked at them, but won't grab them. How long before she might adjust to them? And is there anything I can do to make them more appealing. She's quarentined, so it's not like she can see another gecko eating them to learn from if that's even possible.

I am fairly new to this. My first post here. I have 3 baby leopards right now all in seperate tanks. I have to drop a mealie in front of my gecko to get them to eat it. They don't seem to have any interest in the ones in the bowl but once I drop one in front of them and they see it moving they almost always attack it.

From what I have read and seen from my geckos they simply won't eat anything unless it seems very alive and moving which I believe is why they get so excited about crickets, mine also love crickets.

Try dropping worms in front of them if you want to feed them worms. This way the worm seems more alive to them. I have given up on the food dishes in my tanks and simply feed them myself every day. They are getting used to seeing me open the tank and they know their food is coming. One would actully bite me every single time my hand got near him when I first brought him home. Now he realizes my hand feeds him and within 2 weeks has stop attacking me.

I give them as many crickets as they will eat in 5-10 minutes and sometimes a couple meal worms or wax worms.

When they are full they retire to their hide and I remove anything they didn't eat.

Some Leos will not eat certain feeder insects no matter what you try. Once I started feeding mine superworms they wouldn't give a mealworm a 2nd look no matter what I tried. I have one guy who won't touch ANY kind of worm whatsoever, mealworms, superworms, silkworms or butterworms, and won't eat a roach, it's crickets or nothing for him LOL He is by far my pickiest eater, it drives me crazy especially since I planned to eventually get rid of crickets all together . . . ohhhh the things we'll do for our pets ROFL
