turtlemix21 Jul 28, 2003 08:53 PM

Hey I was looking in the classifides, and someone from orange county California has an add for captive bred russian tortise babies for the price of $150.00 I know that adult russainss go for anywhere between 45.00 to 70.00. It just seems that the price of 150.00 is high. Maybe not, Just wondering if that is a great price??

It's not high at all when you consider:

1) How many CB Russian hatchlings you seen for sale over the last 13 years.
2) They are captive bred, and don't need the battery of tests from a vet WC Russians do.

Mine next year will be priced the same. At this price they are well worth it.

$150-$175 is the going rate for hatchling russian tortoises. I have seen them as high as $225 though.

Considering that you are encouraging captive breeding, saving adult animals from capture, death, and all the horrors of the wild-caught reptile trade, not to mention what the breeder has gone through to clean up the adult animals, and that Russians don't produce that many eggs in a year (compared to say, sulcata), then I'd say that price is just fine. Just make sure you get and save a receipt - with the price of adult Russians in pet stores having doubled in the past year, it might not be long before they are upgraded on CITES, and it never hurts to have proof of aquisition, considering the longevity of tortoises.
