smartest lizards?

xruthlessx76 Jul 28, 2003 08:58 PM

i'd really like to get an argentine b&w tegu after reading how intelligent and tame they can be (come when their name is called etc.) but i'm afraid i don't have enough room for one....

so are there lizards out there that can be trained/tamed but not get quite as big as monitors or tegus?

bearded dragons I believe get very tame and actually enjoy human companionship. This is what I have heard and read alot.

Really? I was thinking about getting either a bearded dragon or iguana. Anyone else hear that about beardies? Thanks

yeah, I've seen some amazingly tame beardies. Do yourself a favor, do NOT buy an iguana. They are a very specialized animal to care for properly and even tame ones can get very territorial. they can also inflict very painful bites and leave a welt on you like a bullwhip if they pop you with their tail.

Beardies are almost always extremely tame, they will sit on your shoulder all day if you want. but i doubt they are very smart, i always thought mine were pretty dumb. but they are really cute especially to have a few of them and watch them interact. they require pretty big cages, atleast 4ft long for 1 or 2.

I have a beardie her name is Daisy. GREAT pet, naturally tame and can be trained and become even tamer. They ARE smart, and they get very attatched to you with regular handling. When I hold her she doesn't even bother to grip my shirt. She knows I won't drop her and she is very trusting. She knows that when I am going to put her leash on her she is going to go somewhere. She slips her arms right through the arm holes in the leash. They are pretty lazy, but can be very active. I have become so attatched to Daisy she has become like a sister to me.(LOL)

Intelligence and tameness are different things. A lizard can be very smart but still quite wary or even scared of humans. So the world's tamest and sweetest and most interesting lizard is probably not the same as the world's smartest lizard. Most lizards can learn simple associations very well, especially if food is involved.

As far as bearded dragons go, mine recently had to have medicine. I guess he thinks its delicious, because after two days (ie two doses) he learned to gape his mouth for the yummy plastic syringe. My dog doesn't always catch on that quick!
