what kind of kingsnake

trsatrtr Mar 25, 2006 11:56 AM

I am pretty sure it is a california kingsnake it was given to me as a coastal phase. I have seen some pictures of coastal phase and I don't think that is what it is. I have posted the picture on a couple of other forums but I thought I would try this one to. What is it?

Thanks! I just wanted to make sure. I am new to kingsnakes and while looking around on the forum I saw pics of different types of kingsnakes that resembled mine.

It was given to me. It's previous owners didn't want it anymore and they were going to kill it. I have always wanted a kingsnake so I offered to take it. It came with it's cage and all it's accesories. It's about 5yrs old.

It is a "Skinny phase"

IMO, if you do not know the direct lineage of a cal king, then it is a captive bred phase. To sling the "coastal" and "desert" phase around is to assume that is where they came from. Unless that IS where they came from. Cal kings are found in other areas and other states besides California, and coastal and desert areas.

So what would the cal kings from the mountains of Arizona be called? I've seen them black & white banded (almost 50-50), brown and white banded (almost 50-50), black with thin yellow bands, brown with thin yellow bands. All of these have been found on my property here at 5,000 feet elevation. The only type of cal king that I have not seen in Arizona is an aberrant, just bandeds.

So it DOESN'T have to be either "desert" or "coastal" unless it came from there.

I wonder if he is a wildcaught snake. He looks either dehydrated or possble sick from parasites.

Let him soak in 1 1/2" of water for 20 minutes and he should look better.

I think it looks really thin, I don't think it was being fed enough. It's owners were tired of it and they were going to kill it so I offered to take it.

yeah. you did the right thing. looks like they were killing it already.

My favorite of the kings are the LasVegas Locales. Brilliant white.
