Breeding age question

jasonw Mar 25, 2006 02:33 PM

This kind of involves all reptiles. I hear so much bad about breeding to young or to small, I was just wandering what keeps them from breeding to small or young in the wild? Thanks in advance.

Nothing keeps a snake from breeding if it has the chance. Smaller animals well be less able to find a mate, and compete for one if necessary.
Smaller animals have smaller litters/clutches when bred, and are more likely to die from complications.

All in all, wild animals don't live as long as captive animals (for commonplace, well understood species) so comparisons such as this are based on misconception. It's still a good question though, and it never hurts to ask

Thank you that makes a lot of sense, I would imagine a lot of individuals die each year in the wild from being egg bound, We just only heard about it with captive animals. I did not consider them having to compete for a mate witch also makes a lot of sense. Thanks again.
