Large rat pinkies vs mice hopper

Juile Mar 25, 2006 05:01 PM

Are large hairless rat pinkies better than mice hoppers that have hair ?

The pet store in the area sells hairless rat pinkies and hopper mice . Both same size same price but I imagine rat pinkies since no hair might digest better .

Any input ?

Thanks.

Rat pups/pinks, generally have a better nutritional content than mice, and snakes will grow better on them.IMO

Thanks glad thats the case as all the hopper hair seemed to go undigested and I prefer large rat pinkies but wasnt sure if they were as good as mice hoppers.

thanks

You might have a problem if all of the hair is not digested. its ok to have some hair but you should check your temps. My hogs, (western, eastern, and mexicans), do not have hair in thier poopooo. )
Good luck,
Nick

Right side of tank - air temp of 80 with UTH also in that side under substrate under hide area the UTH is set for 90 .
The other tank side is 68/70 degrees no UTH with hide area there also. Its a 20 gallon long tank in room temp of 68 . I use 60 watt black moon bulb to warm air on one side of tank (on 24/7 in winter and Spring).
He goes back and forth but actually likes the middle of tank which has air temp like 75. In summer I dont use any heat .
He is a great eater but loves rat pinkies over mouse hoppers though both more or less same size .
Thanks

When you say “better” I’m assuming you mean nutritionally better. In general (and when the prey size isn’t a consideration) I tend to opt for the prey with the most-calcified skeleton. So, I would go for hopper mice over pinkie rats.

Of course, if you are feeding one of the hognose species which usually eats anurans, that’s a whole other discussion, I guess.

Oh I see the skeleton is better. Some prefer rat pinkies some mice hoppers guess like everything else good reason for both.
I think will just switch hee and there till rat pinkies to small .
Thanks
