Help! WTF sick...

scatticus Mar 25, 2006 08:20 PM

I checked on my WTF last night, and he looked awful. Heres a run down:

-Thick, mucus like shedding
-Creamy White Discharge from back and head when I picked him up
-very dry, despite humid environment and access to water
-bright green blotches on legs (otherwise a dark brown) which is unusual for him.

I have had him (or her) for a few months and the place I got him from says the previous owner had him for no longer than six months, so he is not quite a year old. I recently purchased crickets from a different source than I had been, and he has had two feedings (seven crix) of the new ones in a week. I hope this is enough info for someone to help, I have him quarantined, and he is due for another feeding tonight, should I feed him those crix? Unfortunately a vet trip is not an option because I live w/ my parents, and they would never take a frog to a doctor. Thanx for any help you can give!

Hey,
There are so many things this could be and I really would take him to the doctor ASAP, but you do know thats what we will all say.
What it sounds like is a fungal or bacterial infection, since both are treated with different things you would need to find out which one by taking the frog to a vet.
I do not reccomend self treating this unless you know what you are doing. It is possible that quarentining the frog and cleaning its cage 1-2 times a day, while spraying him with fresh clean water might help, but really a good idea to at least consult a vet. There are so many types of bacteria and fungi out there that can attack these little guys that the vet might do a culture to find out the best and cheapest anitibiotic/treatment for you. Much luck to you and you little green friend, keep us updated on his condition.

thank you so much for your reply. I've heard talk of online 'ask a vet' websites, which might be a good way to convince my parents he really needs to see a doc. Does anyone know of one?

If you would like to know, I have been working for a vet for about 3 years. If you were to call my office on the phone we would reccomend your frog be seen immediatly. This might not be just something that will go away on its own, it could be very life threatening. Finding the right drugs/antibiotics to use is VERY critical in the survival of your little green one, just like in a human paitent. Having learned what I know now about how fragile these and many other reptiles are I will always reccomend a vet trip over home treatment, even if it is to asses the frogs overall health. Most of the time animals do not show illness until they are very sick, becuase if they did this in the wild they would most assuridly be eaten. Unfortunatly I do not see many reptiles that are not sick and are comming in for just a checkup, they are usually on deaths door and it is all we can do to save them. Please take him to a vet before he gets to ill to save.

I just purchased a frog from petsmart who is having the exact same symptoms as your frog. They are treating him for it with quite a few antibiotics (They started with baytril every day and now I'm giving him shots every other day and a special antibiotic bath every day. ) It's not red leg but most likely a gram negative bactirial infection (from the report that came back from the vet) that most likely resulted in poor environmental conditions at the pet store. On top of that he won't eat, so they think he has worms and they gave him a dewormer. Now, I'm force feeding him and I have him quarentined and clean the cage at least once a day. I know this reply is probably a little late with the knowledge but I hope your little guy is ok. I'm hoping mine gets well...
