My new Uro cage

Spankenstyne May 19, 2003 12:22 PM

Hi guys, i've posted only a few times over time here but have been a longtime reader.Just wanted to share my new cages with ya.

The pics aren't the greatest, as i'm excited to snap a few and post em but if anyone's interested i can take some better detailed ones, with the lights out too lol..

Basically they are 5/8 melamine 4' x 2' boxes with S4S Fir doors with plexi panels, and a fir strip to hold in the substrate.

Hope you enjoy, i had a blast making these.
This picture is a bit distorted due to compression to make it a viewable size..I'll post a few more here too..

Cacti and succulents are only native to new world deserts. Uromastyx are not used to those types of plants, and they may try and eat them. Also, they do not know better and will probably climb up the cactus and possibly injure themselves. The cages are very nice though, and you did a good job decorating. I would like a cage like that for a group of collard lizards or rosy boas. If you really want it to be natural though, then you should remove or change the plants.

Cacti are mostly from the Americas, while Southern Africa alone harbours more succulents than any other similar region in the world.Africa is home to plenty of succulents, including Mali.

From Succulent.net "Southern Africa has the worlds richest succulent flora, approximately 46% of the estimated 10 000 succulent species of the world occur here"

I have to apologise if that came off wrong.Reading that again it came across all smart-ass like which wasn't my intention, sorry about that.

I wanted to thank you for the compliments, and just to point out that there are actually succulents there. Also the plant in the corner has no thorns at all.

I understand you're probably coming from a "species specific habitat" perspective with plants as well, but i just wanted a cage that looked nice and was "deserty" looking. As far as i could find none of the plants i have in there are toxic.

Cheers

No Problem. It is a really nice job on the cage, and as long as the cactus in the corner is not sharp, it should be fine. And yes, I do like to follow species specific habitats for the most part, but sometimes I also get overly creative in the design, or I get lazy and just keep them in the most basic of setups, lol.

Hehe i hear ya..
He has been munching on the smaller succulents a bit, all seems fine and from what i could find they aren't toxic but i did take the two smaller ones out..Man he's a little pig

Hey, I didn’t think you came across as smart a$$ at all. Rather restrained, in fact. Anyway, what I noticed right away about your setup and liked was the casters. As the years go by, I find myself wanting darn near everything over 30 pounds to come with wheels.

Yeah i definately wanted casters. My last setup was just for the kingsnake (currently at the bottom), and was a modified existing cabinet 4'x18"x20"ish.So it just had the existing legs and was a pain in the butt to get in behind for anything. The casters are a dream, i can wheel that whole unit so easily to get at the plugs and timers.I highly HIGHLY recommend anyone else making a big cage to do the same.

I think the cages look great- one thing, dont take it offensively, i just thought i would point out that it looks like you used microwaves to make them. cool though.
