Gestation and Clutch Size Quesiton

yellowconda12 Mar 25, 2006 09:15 PM

I posted this in the Kingsnake Forum too,.. I was wondering which milksnake has the largest clutch size? I was also wondering which Milksnake has the shortest gestation? My buddy and I are thinking of getting into kings or milks.

As far as clutch sizes, I've gotten 14 eggs from 4 year old Hondurans, 10 from 4 year old Brooksi, 10 from 3 year old Sinaloans, 10 from 4 year old Cal kings, and 10 from a 10 year old Taylori. Multistriata, Syspila, Taylori, and Gentilis all seem to lay 4-6 until they hit that magic 6-10 year point and drop slightly larger clutches. Keep in mind, we all get a disappointing clutch now and then or a sterile male..yay!
Gestation typically runs the 50-70 day cycle, not sure if any one ssp has a "shortest" gestation.
Hope that helps, Jeff

Jeff did a good job in listing some of the clutch sizes he's personally witnessed and in describing the overall gestation periods. There are some recently written books that list the average clutch sizes, gestation and incubation of many of the subspecies of lampropeltis as well.
Pictured below is an adult 7 year old L.t. nelsoni that laid a clutch of 16 for me last year. She then turned around and double-clutched, dropping 8 more eggs.

I would expect that 20 eggs have been produced by a couple massive females but do any of you have credible info on ssp and age of a Triangulum female with a clutch of 20 or more eggs?
Jeff
