MikeRusso Mar 26, 2006 07:32 AM

I just picked up this 04 Applegate Female. I think she is going to be one of my favorites.

I don't think they get any better.

Personally I don't think anything beats a good old normal phase AMK. The Hypo's and Applegates just don't do it for me. Maybe I should have my head checked!(LOL) Momma always said that I'm special!(LOL) Don't get me wrong though, I'll take a New England Axanthic or a Hypo Brooksi any day.

Take care!

I agree with you I like the normals too, that's why i have both, but a little variety is nice well!

Man!, I thought I was the only person who felt that way.I bought a pyro awhile back because it had really distinct crossovers. jeff

cochran Mar 26, 2006 04:59 PM

Here's mine!,nothing special, just a plain 'ol pyro. jeff

I tend to agree. I prefer all three colors on any of the mountain kingsnakes. If I get one, I'll insist on one that has all three colors.

On the other hand, variety is fun, and Mike seems to be an enthusiast of these guys. If the snake were only red, white, and a little yellow, I wouldn't like him as much, but the dark highlights around the face give him a neat look.

You didn't spoil the party at all. If you hadn't said anything, Mike might not have posted his other picture, and that guy (or gal) is also a beauty. A mountain kingsnake of some kind is definitely on my list.

I just like Pyro's - so i am in the minority here with all of you brooksi / desert king lovers. Sometimes i am temped to buy a pair of Brooksi just to fit in... (not really)

This is a Pyro Male that i got directly from Cris Baubles, he is about 17". He just switched up to large fuzzy mice and is already one of my favorites.

Oh, I am all over them pyros, but they are down the list for 07! The mountain kings are very cool, and I like the norms over the Apples and such but they are all cool looking snakes.

That's another impressive snake. I still like the second one the best of these three, but all three are gorgeous.

Thanks for sharing,

This 04 low band count Female is prob. more of what you like to see in a pyro. I actually just sold her to make room for some new stuff & upcoming 06 hatchlings. I really like this one and I am sorry to see her go but time and space limits my collection.

wftright Mar 26, 2006 07:16 PM

You're exactly right. That's the ideal pyro in my opinion. If I lived near you and knew she were for sale, I would have placed a bid. Maybe I'd rather have a zonata of some kind, but she'd be nearly impossible for me to turn down. Oh well, I'm sure it's for the best. I'm still waiting on some more books to learn more about all of these snakes. My fire for a mountain king has dimmed a little, so waiting is still best.

not everyone likes the low band count.

I personally look for the Type II Knobbies, which have a high band count near 80 with alot of side black crosses.

here's a link to copy if interested in learning the 3 types:

a type II knobbie. notice the high band count and tons of black. Usually type I is what you'll find available in the trade which has greatly reduced black.

We all have our individual likes and dislikes, But I wonder, what prompted you to have to bring up your opinion?

Isn't it enough for you to just think it? cheers

BobS Mar 26, 2006 04:59 PM

I can't speak for him FR, but I think maybe those of us that like the norms but appreciate snakes like that beauty Appelgate maybe just want to remind others that sometimes beautiful is sometimes in the plain regular thing and shouldn't neccessarily be overlooked in the quest to improve or change things in a time when folks are scrambling to manipulate all sorts of other things. I am pleasently surprised no one wasted time getting all weird over folks morphs pro or con. people are gonna do what peoiple are gonna do whether I like it or not. Good luck to all the morph guys but some view the simpler normals as the ultimate art work. Like moving on to the watercolors from the oil paintings, still life etc. at a gallery. We all appreciate other things and hopefully can peacefully coexist.

I wonder if people understand, that type of pyro is wild caught. Hmmmmm I actually caught, in fact, I was with Dave May, Antelopes(Todd) friend. He actually caught. Well he started to catch it and we got into this little fist thing and while Dave is tuff as nails, I ended up with the snake. Well we both had parts of it, but superglue works well.

Ok, WE found it, and I kept it. Ok we found it, but he caught it, and I kept it. Ok, thats my final story. I will post pics someday. The next week we went back and I found another. So there. So it may be a morph, its at least a naturally occuring morph. Cheers

BobS Mar 26, 2006 08:55 PM

Yup, I was aware it was a normaly occurring morph and it is a beauty! You are in the right places a lot of the time. Even though the Gophers are not your emphasis as you said,we wouldn't mind updates on them from time to time if you don't mind.
Bob.

antelope Mar 28, 2006 01:00 AM

Sorry, boss but I don't know Dave. Wish I did and some day I will make it down to Goannaland to meet you, if an invite was thrown my way. I simply did not know that it was a naturally occuring morph. I have only extended my range to alternaland, but I did catch 3 green prairie rattlers in Philmont scout ranch in New Mexico back in 2000. Someday I will come your way for the green rats and splendida like this guy.

For the most part, I feel as you do. I like snakes that have that "factory spec" or "guide book" look. I realize that the look I'm describing isn't real and that every snake is different. I realize that the "morphs" of almost any species can and often do occur in the wild without human manipulation. I even like some morphs a great deal and would consider getting one. Still, if I don't like the "normal" look of a species, I generally just don't like the species.

I can't stand to look at anymore "factory spec" or "guide book" look snakes. I AM BORED AS HELL WITH THEM.

I want a glow in the dark blue radioactive quadruple trait morph that eats lettuce and can out talk FR..

This sounds like the plot of a bad movie, but I look forward to your "Jetzen-style" photos of this guy eating lettuce.

Well I intended no harm by it, and I think voicing opinions and ideas is what forums are all about. I know that you'd prefer to have only the scientifically enlightened here, but that's for another forum.

morgan_so_cal Mar 28, 2006 02:36 PM

i agree!!!

I'm not the hugest fan of unnatural color morphs. Sure, they are beautiful, but Ill take my Type II Knobbie over those "diminished-black" specimens anyday.
