Travelling with Dragons

small_town36 Mar 26, 2006 09:25 AM

I have recently got 3 baby bearded dragons given to me when i was at home from college. Now i have a 3 hours drive back and I am just wondering the best way to travel with these guys. Should i take the furnishings and hammock out and just let them lay on the sand for the drive and make sure the heat is pumping?
any information would be appreciated since i am leaving tonight thanks

Hi,
I traveled from NJ to TN (a 9 hour drive) about 2 years ago and trasported all of my critters in a very small sedan. I found that for my dragon a hard case cat carrier works good as does a soft cased one. I added those instant heat packs to a area he could get to (they sell them at Home depot or lowes or ski shops) and just left the temerature comfortable in the car for me. I had no problems. If your guys are smaller I might suggest getting a critter keeper and putting finley shreded newspaper in it(filled half way or even to the top) and then a instant heat pack at the bottom. The newspaper acts as an insulator, and its alot of times what breeders will ship their lizards in.
Good luck to you on your trip!

cat carriers are good for adult dragons for short drives (2-5 hours). For babies I suggest a small cardboard box with old towels or claen rags for padding. Wrap a cloth around a heat pack if needed but if the car temps and outside temp are not likely to drop below 65F or reach above 90F then they won't need additional heating or cooling. IN a dark box they will just sleep or rest. Don't feed before you leave for the trip but make sure they have the opportunity to drink something. Once you are at your new place, set up their tanks then put the dragons in and let them bask and settle for an hour or two before feeding. (if not enough time to feed before lights out, then skip feeding altogether). Feed normally the next morning.

If your dragons are at least 3 months old, they can do fine with one day without food. If much younger, it would be best to plan to drive first thing in the morning and get them settled into their cages as soon as you can after arriving then feed after an hour to settle and bask. Another note, if it's sunny, don't leave the dragons in the car or don't park the car directly in the sun as it will heat up very fast and overheat your dragons.
