Subspecies and locality breds

IMacBevan Mar 26, 2006 04:20 PM

I've noticed a shift lately from breeding specific subspecies to a more global approach of breeding locality bred boas (I'm not accounting for the breeding of specific color or pattern morphs here), while I think this is a great thing (it's been done in alterna and lichanura for quite some time), I'm wondering what has happened to some of the subspecies that you could occaisionally find such as B.c. nebulosa? Is anyone working with them? What about some of the other subspecies such as orophias?

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Ian

collegues have been searching for years for B.c.nebulosa and have not been able to locate any. I have come across a few people who kept them many years ago. To my knowledge they were not successfully bred in captivity.

Orophias are extremely difficult to locate as well. I have been fotunate enough to find a few specimens in captivity over the years, however I have never seen them available. Likewise I have not seen any with credible documentation as to their origin.

There really hasn't been a shift OFF of subspecies, it is just that most are not available. The largest variety in natural occuring boas exists in the locales of B.c.constrictor and in B.c.imperator. The latter with the available morphs, dwarf forms, and large variety in geographic phenotypes has become the most popular.
