How many watts and what kind of fixtures?

Tigergenesis Jul 28, 2003 10:03 PM

I was wondering if most people use the clamp style lamps or does anyone use the combo strip light fixtures?

Also, how many watts should I be thinking of getting? My tank is 50 gallons.

I've been looking at ESU's Reptile Combo light or even Zoo Med's Slider Hood. I was thinking of using something like: Exo Terra's ReptiGlo 2.0 just for viewing purposes (daytime), the Day Glo Neodymium Daylight Lamp (not sure how many watts), and the Night Glo 15 watt (for moonlight/night viewing w/o much heat effect). I prefer the strip light look as opposed to the clamp style.

Am I on track or at least close?

As always, thanks again!

Yes, I plan to use an UTH.

I can't think of a single reason to use a light with a Ball Python.

that was my original idea; however, the place/room that the BP will be in gets very little light from outdoors and stays dark and I'd love to see him.

I agree with None. I love the flexwatt. I leave it on all the time. Also, flex watt allows me to just buy large plastic bins and drill one thousand holes on the top. I don't have to build custom lids with screen top to accomodate a lamp fixture. The setup allows me to have ~70% humidity all the time.

The snakes I have are also in a very dark room. My bedroom is completely darkened so I can nap during the day. I just turn on the bedside lamp each day and do my light cycle that way.

I like the convinience of under the tank heating.

cheers.

I should also clarify that this room is also my office. That said, I need light in there to work, etc. So either I keep turning my desklight off and on ( I assume this would be disruptive to the BP) or I get a light over the BP's tank that would provide enough light for me to also use - that way even if I am turning my desklight off and on I figure it wouldn't be much of a distraction for the BP.

I just want to make sure that the setup is okay. I'm also confused as to how many watts the basking light should be if I'm using an UTH.

Thank you.

I use a 55g tank for my 31" ball. I have a UTH and a lamp with a 60w red bulb. If you do use a light I wouldn't go anywhere over 75w.

Now I'm thinking that I could do without the ReptiGlo 2.0 lamp and just use the Day Glo Neodymium Daylight Lamp for both heat and light. If this sounds better, then I just need to figure out the wattage I will need with a UTH.

Then just get a real low-wattage neon tube (super cheap) and they won't give off any heat, and you get to see your snake!!
