Best way to check calcium sacs?

SWH Mar 26, 2006 10:29 PM

How do I do this without stressing my gecko? Unfortunately, the guy I bought her from seemed to treat them as breeders first and pets second so they don't tolerate handling at all. She won't even lick baby food from my fingers but I'm hesitant to pry her mouth open. Any suggestions?

Okay I'm gonna quote here from the Rhacodactylus book by Vosjoli,Fast, and Repashy "In crested geckos the calcium sacs are located on the underside of the skull and can be seen by tapping the snout and looking at the back of the roof of the mouth. Calcium reserves will appear as whitish masses in the calcium sacs." I've only done this a few times towards the end of the breeding season. I wrap my hand around her body to hold her legs down so just her head sticks out, and gently tap the nose. Sometimes it takes a time or two. Hope it helps.
