Difference Between Brazillian & Surinam

kimusubi Mar 26, 2006 11:45 PM

What are some ways that you can tell the difference between a baby Brazillian Red Tail vs. a baby Surinam red tail. Personally my own Brazillian Red Tail looks identical to many Surinam red tails I've seen pictures on this board. Is there any way to differentiate? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Since both Brazilians and Surinams are Boa constrictor constrictor, I don't think there is any way to tell the difference.

Well, wouldn't the difference be when they mature or are they really the same? In which case, it brings up the question as to why they're priced differently, and why call them by their locality, when you can just call them BCCs? You know what I mean. There's got to be at least some ways of being able to tell by saddle pattern, or something how they're different.

Thanks for all replies.

There are differences between them if you look close but some will look the same as a suriname. The typical Brazilian you see on the market often have larger blocky peaks and shorter tail patterns. Brazilian can have a higher contrast look with lots of speckles much like an arabesque where as a typical surinames have a lighter cleaner look. This is not always the case and should not be used to determin a boas local. As far as price goes, it really depends on the look, big peaks and high contrast boas with the exotic look often cost more. This is true for both suriname and brazilians. The whole local thing can increase the price also, a boa that lineage can be traced back to brazil are rare when compaired to a suriname boa due to Brazil no longer exporting boas. If I had some pictures of pure local Brazilians I would post them so you can see how different they are compaired to the typical Suriname. You probably have more questions than answers after reading this post. Later

There is only one definitive way to tell them apart and that is knowing where they or they ancestral line was originally collected. There is no other way to tell for sure. Some northern brazillians and surinames and guyana look identical. You cannot tell by looking for traits.
