Baby gecko dieing!!! Please help me feed

Gordonious Mar 27, 2006 12:20 AM

My baby gecko won’t eat. I have a baby gecko with a tail that is extremely skinny. It is very young probably sold to me too young. It was kept in a tank with another of about the same age and the other got the majority of the food. We would bring this one out at times to offer it food separately and it ate then, but I don't think it got enough. Now it is walking around almost as if it has a limp or is retarded and will not eat live food. I put some in front of her and she made several attempt to eat it, but gave up I guess after a couple of misses. I crippled a cricket and left it in front of her and decapitated a meal worm and left it in front of her. I know she is hungry, but she has just about given up. It's probably been two days since I've seen her eat. Her eyes are wide open at the minute and she is pretty alert, but defiantly skiny. PLEASE help.

More than likely if the baby was unsupplemented with a calcium supplement it has Metabolic Bone Disease. Which means the bones are weak and rubbery. You need to supplement almost daily with calcium for hatchlings. You can take the baby and gently push the end of a mealworm against the corner of its mouth until it opens its mouth, then try to get it to eat the worm that way. Hope that helps a little.

I went thru a similiar problem (too similiar in fact) and I came out on the positive side the sick baby gecko that petco was selling was near death until I found this slurry on the net, thanks to golden gate gecko the maker of the recipe?? she also sells geckos I recently bought a beuatiful carrot tail from her, some people say not to use the slurry but what else can you do when there is nothing left to do right? mine started to eat again and is still slowly gaining weight, the cat or dog food has to be purchased from a veteranarian it means anorexia/diet I believe the vet told me.

G3 Slurry: Slurry to help stimulating the feeding response of Non-eating Geckos
By: Marcia McGuiness www.goldengategeckos.com

In a blender, combine:
1 small can Hill's A/D pet food (available at most vets)
1/4-1/3 cup Ensure (not chocolate)
1 jar baby food squash
1/4-1/3 cup Pedialite
2 crushed tablets or contents of 2 capsules Milk Thistle (herbal supplement, liver purifier, found at most drug stores.)
1/2 tsp. each calcium powder and herp vitamin powder
1 large handful of mealworms, added slowly while mixture is blending
Puree all ingredients until completely smooth, and pour into ice cube tray(s) and freeze. Store cubes in zip-lock bag in the freezer until ready to use, then thaw out 1 cube at a time and store in fridge for 2-3 days. I use the empty baby food jar for this purpose, washing it thoroughly after each batch.

*Lately, I have been adding about 1 Tblsp. T-Rex Gargoyle MRP to each new thawed out cube.

Using this mixture, draw a full dropper (1 ml. eye dropper type) and place a drop on the gecko's nose. It will start to lick it off, and as it does, slowly squeeze out a little at a time. Most geckos love this food, and will lap it up. Patience is the key here.

**NOTE: Do NOT tell anyone in your household you put mealworms in the blender!

Ok, tonight isn’t going so great. I need help feeding my Gecko and medicating her.

I went to the vet today. I moved back to northern Delaware(civilization) last night at my school and made an appointment with the vet first thing in the am. I went to see them and they think she has an inner ear infection which is making her off balance, she’s dizzy, and can’t see straight; which explains a great deal. The vets assistant was very helpful and we gave her first dose of meds. When we went to give her food(Hill’s a/d just like suggested) she put up to much of a fight and we figured she had been stressed enough so we let her rest and I was to give her food later tonight. Early this evening I gave her some food, took a huge fight and I got food all over me, but I managed to get some in her mouth.

I have two tiny tiny little syringes, one for food and one for meds, but she is soooo tiny the syringes look huge. I think the doc said she wade 4 grams and on Monday I will have had her for a month. Tonight’s med time didn’t go great at all. Actually it was hell for both her and me. I fought with her for ever, but it’s so hard to keep a 4g baby lizard still while prying it’s mouth open, then putting the syringe in, then pushing on the top to squeeze in the meds. I heard a Gecko make noise for the first time tonight and it was my baby Gecko begging for it’s life while I was trying to save it. She is resting now, I put her in her cage and put her hide over her, so she wouldn’t even have to find her way back.

Tomorrow am I give another crack and feeding and meds. I will be calling to see if the doc is in so I can talk with him, but I can’t afford to make another visit. I pulled my emergency money and literally emptied my bank account. Life just sucks right now.

I'm going to try to post this and updates on my website if I can get it working at:
