Ranco/nighttime drop?

BobS Mar 27, 2006 07:46 AM

Is there any inherit danger in putting a Ranco on a timer to let the nightime temp drop to the ambient room temp? Seems I've read threads where t-stats can go wide open upon restat? I know the Ranco retains the setting in event of a power outage but would it be safe to do that nightly?
Thanks,
Bob.

Bob,
There should not be any problem turning the tstat off every night. When somebody says that a thermostat runs wide open that means that the relay inside is stuck closed and doesn't open the circuit to cut the heat source off. If anything, by turning the tstat off at night there will be less wear and tear on that relay. If you are still a little worried by doing this you can also use a backup tstat. Hope this helps.
