red light vs. sunglo light

kelz0429 Mar 27, 2006 11:00 AM

Okay--I have heard several people suggest the red lights for leopard geckos. Do red lights produce heat? I ask this b/c I need to supplement my terrarium's temp with a light fixture and I do not want to use a bulb/lamp that does not provide heat. Would I be able to use a red light with my ESU Reptile Bi Light fixture? Does anyone have experience with this particular fixture?

Also, what wattage (of red light) would you use in a ten gallon tank?

Heat is a by product of light bulbs and every light bulb will produce heat (the old fashion plain light bulbs that is...they make those new twisty lights bulbs now that produce a lot less heat). As far as wattage is concerned a 40watt light bulb is fine for 10 gallons andything higher will just overheat the geckos in that small of a tank.

I dont think thats true, I just got a leopard gecko last week, Someone on here gave me advice to go no bigger than a 50 watt red bulb for a 10 gallon tank so thats what I bought. Well it barely puts out any heat at all and right under the bulb the tank is only 72 degrees.
