Emacaited Boa

Demetrius Mar 27, 2006 03:09 PM

A recieved a call yesterday about a six-seven foot emaciated boa that was found in a empty appartment suite . It has been without heat , water and food for at least a month . From the looks of it I don't think it has eaten in at least six or seven months . It was very dehydrated when he arrived but I soaked him for a couple hours and has been drinking from his water bowl . He is so skinny that all his ribs and backbone can be seen , he also has several wounds that appear to be old bites . I tried offering a f/t weanling rat but he has shown no interest , I also tried a live hopper rat and he didn't pay any attention to it .I know it is a little early to offer food but he is so so skinny . He seems very weak I don't think he even has the energy to eat . I have him in a large rubbermaid container , on newspaper with a large water bowl . I have the cool end at 84 and the warm end is 95 . What else should I do for him and how can I get some nutrients into him . I have done many rescues in the past but this is the worst snake so far .

He is just shy of 7 feet and is under five pounds .

i would wait to offer food for a few days and let him warm up and re-hydrate. due to his conditions his metabolism has probably dropped significantly. this should pick up as he warms up and re-hydrates.
this guy seems to be in pretty bad condition and a vet visit may be a good idea to get an injection (nutrient/eelectrolytes) to help move in the right direction.

Thank you for all your kind comments .

We must give him a name , it should be a strong name . Something he can grow into and that most people will like . All my animals are used in educational shows and if he pulls through and gets healthy he will be a educational animal and personal pet . So I would love some suggestions , I am open to just about anything . I would post a picture but my camera is not working .

Goliath comes to mind.....a little guy facing a LARGE battle....

Isn't Goliath the big one that gets slain by lil ol david?

A couple names from mythology:

APOLLO (uh-POL-oh; Roman name Apollo) was the god of prophesy, music and healing.

Asclepius A god of healing. His symbol is a snake.

He was strong enough to survive all this and still be alive. That's my idea. So lucky he found you. Taking rescues takes an enormous heart. This snake will eat when he gets his metabolism more normal, and the vet visit is great too!

Best of luck with him,
Caden

You may want to try a soak with Pedialyte. We use about 1/2 a large bottle, mixed with water. Good luck to you!!
