First time breeder question

pelcman Mar 27, 2006 03:44 PM

I have 2 sexaually mature beardies, both at 18mths old. The female had one clutch last year, but my male is a virgin. He woke up late so im just starting to introduce them. Ill put then together and all pre-mating signs are there (head bobbing, arm waving etc..)and my female is receptive with slow head bobs except my male will not actually mount her. I leave them together for a couple hours and no copulation.
Should I just leave them together longer?
Any help would be appreciated.

Leaving them together longer will not hurt. Just be aware that he may attempt to mount her constantly which can tear up her neck a little. When you notice that separate them for a little while.

Good Luck!

I always put my pairs together for short time periods. My males seem to give it one or two good attempts, and then they rest. So I usually give them a few hours to rest then try again. Some times I put them together and one or the other is not receptive, and this can go on for weeks. Instead of putting my females through constant stress when one isn't ready I keep them separate. When they both are ready watch out.. BAM it happens in seconds LOL. It seems they both have to be receptive for them to breed. Some it happens on day one of putting them together, and some I have to try over a period of time, then just one day bam they mate.

Since your male was a late riser, and he isn't going as far as mounting he may not be ready yet. Also try and take them both out on nutral ground. 75% of my breedings here happen in a sectioned off area of my den. I have hard wood floors LOL, so I take their reptile carpets spread them out, and put them together. The last thing ya want is them to be FINALLY about to mate and they hit the hardwood and slide LOL

It is possible they have already mated, unless you were able to watch them the entire time they were together. However continuing pairing them up as already suggested wont' hurt, unless one or the other starts to act aggressively towards the other, then deffinitely separate and keep them separated for awhile.

Buy him some dirty beardie magazines... perhaps some beardie movies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjPJPZaDQ5w&search=bearded dragons
