Homogygous male, 2 Het or 1 ....

EmberBall Mar 27, 2006 07:00 PM

Ok, it is the age old question, if you get a Homozygous male, do you get two Het females or one Homozygous female? My thinking is, it depends on your goal. Lets take Albinos, I purchased two Het females first, and got my male Albino later, because my goal is to make Albinos, sell the males, keep the females, and make some Albino crosses. Now, lets assume your goal is to make Albino crosses right away, and not Albinos, or, if you do not want to risk that the Hets are really Hets, or the Het odds, maybe you buy the Homozygous pair. I am curious as too what others think, and if you buy a Homozygous male and Het females, or Homozygous pairs, and why?

That is exactly my thinking on all of my recessive projects. I have at least two het females for each of my visual males except where I couldn't afford the visual male then I have het males and will be keeping my fingers crossed for a visual male from the first clutch! Basically my goal is to add some nice crosses to my collection and it's just much cheaper to do them yourself.

use the albino to 2 (or more) het females........method

.......make more hets from him too.......and keep more albino males........I have 3 male amel and 7 hets now.......make alot more albinos and sell them all........I may keep female albinos but they probably won't be bred to albino males......more like spider and pied males........

you think????

Like you said it depends on the persons goal. My goal is to produce quality captive bred balls for resale and some cool crosses along the way. In 02' I bought 1.1 albino, .3 hets and .2 poss hets. This way I have a female albino for crosses and hets for albino/het production. I did the same with ghost but to a higher degree. I bought 2.3 ghost, .4 hets and .4 poss hets. I now have about 10 het female ghost, since this is the most versatile recessive morph on the market. Having an army of het females should allow you to produce enough homozygous females to hold back some and sell a few. I try to buy as many females as I can afford het and homozygous with any project I get in to. Here is a pic of an albno and het I produced last year. Jon

I would personally say get a homo pair if you can, especailly if you want to do crosses, would be alot easier to say breed a spider or a Mojave to an albino female raise up a male produced and breed it back would be prolly the quickest way to producing a homozygous cross.

if your goal is to create crosses, buying the homozygous female is the best way to go. if your goal is to create more of that morph, het females are the way to go. Think of it this way, you can buy most het females at 1/3 the price of the homozygous females. If you hit the odds 50/50, you are getting 1/3 more morph animals at the same price. 1 female albino bred to albino male = 6 albinos. 3 het female albino's bred to albino male = 18 eggs = 9 albino's using 6 egg clutchs as example not rule. you could hit better odds and get almost all albino's or get terrible odds and only get a couple. My wife and I bought our albino female this year for the sole purpose to cross with a pied male, I have a couple het albino females to go with a male albino owned buy Jessie Jeffcoat, whom we are working on several projects together.
