Lazy male breeders...an experiment....

Nokturnel Tom Mar 27, 2006 07:06 PM

I have an important male breeder who has a few females....lucky guy eh? I am hopeful he bred all of them once,....but now he is being lazy and not responding to their come and get it routine. I am going to take him completely out of my snake room for a few days, as many females are probably releasing pheremones now and I get the feeling it is just not doing anything for him. He has rested a few days in between copulations...but he just doesn't seem to be completeing the mission now. Has anyone tried removing the male from the scent of females for a few days and had a better reaction when he is introduced as oppposed to just seperating him and leaving him in the same room? Just curious...I would like to try this as soon as tonight but we have rainy weather here all week and sometimes this gets the breeders breeding in my snake room so I just not sure if the timing is right? Any one try this before??? Tom Stevens

Don't know about removing them for a few days . . .BUT what I have done before is: I try to remind the "lazy" males that they are not the only ones in the world, if you know what I mean. I just did it again last night: I put my two biggest male kings together and they wrestled for a while. There was no biting involved (but always closely supervise just in case). Both snakes gently wrapped around each other (while stretched out) and tried to pin each others' head down by taking a partial loop of their bodies and pushing down on the head of the other snake. It is always interesting to watch this, but it sure gets both males' attention once you separate them and put them in the female's cage! I let this go on for about 20-25 minutes and then I separate the males BEFORE a winner is determined, that way both snakes will not feel intimidated and/or scared to mate.

Walk out to that nice big tree outside your house (I assume there is one) and grab a handful of leaf litter and throw it in the cage with the pair. This will get both snakes actively searching out all of the cage sniffing at everything. With all the scents the male will usually go into hyper-drive.
