Oh Yeah...NM Chris (uncloudy) is from AZ....Oops.
Glad to see you are seeing some action over there. The tail whipping always stops.....Just take out the male...feed...and try again...and again..and again. But....You already know all of that.

Have all your females shed once already? If so, I am truly way behind..........Oh well, maybe it will all pay off. Have you ever had to wait for a second shed for a female to be receptive?.....I have many times.
John Lassiter

vichris Mar 28, 2006 09:48 PM

Yes, all of my females have shed. I've only seen one confirmed hookup though with my most "experienced" female and the most "experienced" male too. I've got 2 males that are in shed now.

So far Sharktooth has not hooked up and doesn't really act like he knows whats going on. Has anyone else had inexperienced males act like that?

These two are the ones that did the dance.

Funny ya'll should talk about tail whipping because I just put my first couple of Thayeri together yesterday, and every time he got close she would slap him in the face with her tail. Is this something that Thayeri do often? This is my first year to breed Thayeri, and I have not experienced this in the past with my cal kings, or corns. I will take your advice, and feed them, and try again. Thanks.
Ken

pikiemikie Mar 30, 2006 02:57 PM

Ken, that means she is not ready just yet. Take the male out and try in a few days and just keep repeating until she breeds. Keep an eye on them when together. I had a female kill a male last year, when I was'nt looking. She did'nt even want to eat him..mike

Thanks Chris. Now I just have to wait and see if they keep their colors. This is my first clutch of yellow ones. So far, so good.......mike

vichris Mar 30, 2006 05:06 PM

Mike is right. I've seen my cal kings, corns, milksnakes, gopher snakes, and graybands do it too. (tailwhipping)

I see it mostly in first time breeder females. John was right too about just feeding them and keep trying. Most of the time my females become much more receptive after their second shed.

All of my females were fed yesterday so I'll give them about three days, so they digest their meal, and then try again. I'd almost bet money though that they won't be ready until they shed again.

Didn't realize it might take them 2 sheds to get interested. Thanks for the advice.

John:

Glad to see you're alive and well. That reclusive lifestyle does not suit you!

Cheers,

Bob

jlassiter Mar 27, 2006 09:00 PM

Yep...still kicking.
I am way behind, but I hope the longer brumation time will be rewarding. I am feeding for the first time tonight......Man I got too many snakes!......LOL

All is great....Just a bunch of hard work ahead of me to catch up with everyone....If not, I guess I will be just a little behind...Doesn't really matter just as long as I get to see some Mexicana hatch for me again this season.....Nothing is as fun as that...almost nothing!
BTW.....Any herping going on in Kingsville??
John Lassiter

mike17l Mar 28, 2006 12:28 PM

no john, no herping going on yet. waiting for optimum conditions with gas prices the way they are. i am getting anxious, so i might head out tonight.

Don't stress about catching up to everyone breeding. It's going to be an awesome year for mexicanas. Who can argue that thayeri aren't the most exciting to see what comes out of those eggs in the natural snake kingdom. I look forward to seeing some of your pairings, especially from the mex mex's you had mentioned previously in another post.

One thing to remember is;
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Happy Herping/Breeding,
Uncloudy

jlassiter Mar 29, 2006 08:17 PM

I hope you are right Chris......And I do go by the quality over quantity rule.......I would love both though.....LOL

pikiemikie Mar 29, 2006 11:09 PM

Hey John, your not behind me. I just brought my snakes out too here in Philly........mike
Chris' Colubrids

jlassiter Mar 30, 2006 08:07 PM

I was thinking that you guys brought yours out this time every year due to the COLD winters up there......I could not even imagine those temps. When you have to put a heater in the snake room to keep the temps up to 50F or so it is TOO cold for this South Texas native.....
John Lassiter

BTW.....Drop me an email when you get the time....
