Possibly egg bound leo

Aeromeggy Mar 28, 2006 09:38 AM

I'm afraid my leopard gecko may be eggbound. 4 of my females were put with their males right around February 26th. All the other females have laid their first set of eggs except this one. She is obviously gravid and has been digging in her law box for some time now. I have never known leos to to hold their eggs for a month. This is her first breeding season.

If she is eggbound, what can I do?

I am sorry I can not answer your question about what to do if she is egg bound and I am not an experienced breeder but it is my understanding that Leopard Geckos take about a month to lay after mating, Nature being what it is I would imaging some could take 5-6 weeks and some may even take only 3 weeks. If you look at her belly can you visibly see eggs in her abdomen? If not I wouldn’t be concerned about her being egg bound, in fact if after a month you can not see eggs in her abdomen I would say she is not even gravid.

It may take about to 5-6 weeks for a first time female to lay their first clutch. Of course if she is egg bound (loss of appetite and sluggish) with the eggs visible through the belly, what I have always been advised to do would be warm water soaks while massaging the belly from the middle down toward the vent. If she begins to loose any weight at all, she may require vet assistance in the form of surgery.

Yes, I can see the eggs in her belly.

She has not lost her appetite, nor is she sluggish. In fact, she is quite active. Maybe it is just a case of her being a first time breeder. I have not had this experience with any of my other first timers, but each is different.

I will try the warm water massage anyway.

Thanks!
