Waxy Monkey Light and Heat

P_Reticulatus Mar 28, 2006 03:39 PM

I am soon to purchase one or two waxy monkey frogs. I have the setup put together. I just would like to know what the ideal ambient and basking temperatures should be. Also should the basking spot be avalible day and night with a ceramic heat emitter or just during the day with an incandescent bulb.
Thanks.

just a little note, frogs don't bask, not the way lizards do. Dries them up. It's really never been proven that frogs bask

Please ignore what was previously written as the person must have no experience with Waxy Money treefrogs... Now, I keep a basking light on mine (a 40w house bulb in a reflective fixture) This keeps the basking spot temp at approx 90'F, I keep the tank dry (full screen lid) with a water dish. Waxy Monkeytree frogs assumeing your talking about P.Sauvagei (the only species I keep) secrete a layer of wax wich helps them retain moisture. Every day I find my frogs basking under this lamp. Basically you should treat this amphibian like a lizard. I have had great success with keeping mine as juvies on astro turf (I think thats what its called (the soft fuzzy green carpet)). And only ever lost one due to an impaction when keeping him on a large bark substrate. At night I dont use a secondary heater and simply unplug the basking light. I live up in Canada so id assume my room temperature would be much cooler than yours so you should be fine at night. I have kept this species for years like this... As for UVB, Exo Terra states that these guys require a 5.0 fixture but as ive mentioned before ive raised juvies to adults with no exposure to UVB and have had no problems with MBD or calcium deficiencies to date. I forgot to mention, I dont spray the tank... everytime I used to spray them they would turn very dark (from their normal lime green) so I eventually stopped spraying them altogether, and they seem fine with this. Now I wouldnt classify them as a treefrog (although they are) as they cannot climb glass (they act more like a toad), so if your putting decoration in the tank keep this in mind, otherswise enjoy the frogs, they are definately easy to carefor once everything is properly set up. If you have anymore questions ill be more than happy to answer them. Take care.

Thanks a lot. That cleared up all of my questions I was just unsure about the lighting because I knew they did bask but since they are nocturnal I figured they should not have incandescent, but since you have had succes I guess I will go with incandescent. I post pics of my set up when it is completed.
Thanks,
Nick

Thanks for the great info. Couple of questions though. What diameter branchs do they like? Id heared they don't crawlup glass and the terrarium ive set up only has large diameter branches. apx 3". What size would you suggest. Also do you have any pictures?
Thanks Gavin

Hello, branch size should be just big enough for them to grasp with their feet. So their toes almost touch when they are holding on to the branch. Hope this helps
