Heavy feeding this time of year?

bleibow Mar 28, 2006 03:41 PM

I remember reading a post from Dr Seward about not feeding animals at this time of year because it can throw off the breeding cycle. Can you review with us your current breeding regimen? Also does anyone pair their animals this early or do most of you wait until May? If you do, do the animals copulate sooner? Thanks for any advice anyone can offer for my first breeding season.

I usually feed heavely when the animals are out of hibernation and stop feeding during the couple of weeks of breeding. I suspect, however, that the weight needs to be on them before they go into hibernation the year before (I have some field data that may support that guess).

Also, I am pretty certain that females readiness to breed is set by a given number of degree-days after the quiescent period of hubernation.

Let me know if any additional information or explanation would help.
