NEW TO CYCLURA with LOTS of Concerns

imindawoods1 Mar 29, 2006 09:48 AM

Hi everyone
I am brand new to this list and just glancing through it answers many questions that we are accumulating when it comes to cyclura care and the choosing of which cyclura to get. We are considering a Rhino or a lewisi baby.
As many of you have experience with these guys, I would greatly appreciate knowing which breeders (from these clasifieds) are the ones to call for a cyclura, and which are the ones to stay away from. I spoke to Ben Siegel, who says he has Ehrig bloodline rhinos, Glades Herp, and also Bay Area Reptiles. They seem nice enough, but we want to be careful. Any info on any of these would be greatly appreciated. I do know of a reptile breeder in the area here in NH, but their prices do seem way inflated compared to the ones in Florida or Ca. with Cyclura.
Thanks....

Have you talked to David Blair. crittercorner.com He is in CA. He is a friend so I may be biased but I have animals from him and his customer service is great.

Hi there,
Taking your advice, I actually phones David today. He was very very nice and accomodating, and surprisingly, prices for his lewisi (from big blue) are totally reasonable! I have to wait until the beginning of October tho, as the clutches hatch at that time, but I am very happy that I contacted him. Thank you for the idea In the interim, I can get the iggy home all ready for the fall.

I don't keep Cyclura, but I can tell you that both Ben Siegel & Bay Area Reptiles are both reputable dealers with quality herps. The reptiles they have sent me have been top notch.

Congratulations on your decision to get a cyclura !
It obviously costs more to raise and breed a cyclura in the Northeast than in California or Florida, so it should cost more.
A cyclura owner in the Northeast, is going to have different questions that might best be answered by someone with local experience. It may be worth the extra $ for good local knowledgeble support received during a cycluras 30 plus year lifespan. That is if it is genuine local experience - most cyclura are brought up from Florida.
Although not from the NorthEast, David Blair is very excessible and provides knowledgable advise.
My favorites are the rhino iguanas. You might enjoy my picture gallery links:

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi there,
Just went to your photos and may say that your Rhinos are beautiful! I am very excited about the prospect of getting a cyclura and rhinos or lews are going to be our two most favorites to decide upon. Being from NH it is definitely cooler here, but with the right care and appliances, there really is no problem raising a cyclura round these parts. I have a friend who has an iguana, green one, who is 15 years old and doing quite well. These guys are way less hardy than the cyclura, so I know that we will be fine.
It takes so much preparation to really do this right, and we do have some months before any hatchlings become available, so we are trying to go step by step and take some time doing the initial vivarium where they will be for a little while, anyway. I guess with the babies, glass enclosures really do work better as we can really keep the temps at a constant without too much difficulty. Will keep everyone apprised of what we end up doing, but right now, I am in the process of locating Bob Ehrig and David Blair...both tops apparently with cyclura. Just a little nervous about the shipping thingie......
