i'm planning to put paper as a new substrate.
is there a easy, practical method to prevent direct contact of the paper-glass-underheatpad? I'm planning to use flat stones.

There is no real need to keep them apart (Glass and paper). There is no fire hazzard or any practical means for them to be separated. I always get questioned by family and friends about my rack, the fire hazzard of having the heattape on the rack, then the fire hazzard of having paper towel substrates. I always tell them that if I was keeping my aniamls at 400 degrees, then maybe there would be a cause for concern.
However if you want to separate them, then I would get slate-tile from Home Depot and get them cut to fit.

...i'm not talking about fire hazards... i'm talking about gecko burn hazards
maybe i'm buying some extra layer of glass or some cork to put between

Either of those things should work well. I hope you didn't take what I was saying the wrong way. I was just informing anyone else who might read this thread that there was no hazard.
As for burns, if you have a simple dimmer (cost from $4-10 at Home Depot) on your heatpad, it shouldn't get hot enough to burn. Just trying to give you other options.

Pretty much it's a thermostat. It doesn't have set temperatures you just have to experiment to get the correct temperature.
