African House Snakes - how big?

Clydesdale Mar 29, 2006 04:19 PM

I've read a bit on African House Snakes. It appears that the females normally get larger than the males. I've seen caresheets that say they can get to be 5 feet long.

I've never seen a picture of one that looks like it's more than 2.5 or 3 feet.

Do they actually ever get to be 5 feet long? What's the largest you can expect one to be as an adult? What's the average length of males and females?

I have had several females get to 4 feet, although they are a very slender 4 foot snake. Therefore they don't look as big as a 4-5 foot cornsnake or kingsnake. I have no doubt an old female that hasn't bred too much could get to 5 feet.

I think there is also a geographic pattern to housesnake size. Snakes from southern Africa may not get as large. The largest housesnakes I had were from Tanzanian stock.
