WPTZ (Plattsburgh, New York) 29 March 06 Lamprey vs. Mudpuppies - Salmon, salamanders, and so-called scientists. (Paul A. Sands)
Sea lampreys...the ugly parasites that attach themselves to trout and salmon...are a plague. They need to be wiped out.
Both New York and Vermont are trying...using a chemical lampricide in creeks where the ugly parasites breed. Lewis Creek, for example, where it's time to treat the water again.
But hold on. Here comes the "Reptile and Amphibian Scientific Advisory Group!" These pseudo-scientists say they can't endorse lampricides. They're worried about the mud-puppies.
That's right. Mudpuppies...a small salamander that lives in the same creek. Now, the last time the water was treated, only sixteen mudpuppies were exposed. None of them died.
Thousands of lamprey did, though....protecting our trout and salmon.
That's progress....unless you're a so-called scientific advisory group that doesn't listen to the evidence.
We urge Vermont to treat Lewis Creek again....and ignore their so-called advice.
That's our opinion. What's yours?
