Rubbermaid containers?

Star_Of_Life Mar 29, 2006 07:47 PM

I just read a topic down below about using rubbermaid containers and what not. I'm sorry to bother yall again but I was wondering if you could clarify some issues for me. Like if its in one of those things how is heating accomplished? Also if its in a rack system or just in the rubber maid I assume it doesn't need light? Also how much do these things run in the cost range? I understand it'd need air holes to breathe but is it enough for good ventilation? And finally for checking ventilation, can I use a CO2 detector or oximeter to measure efficiency ( I have a few that the hospital didn't need anymore)?

Just need a uth (under tank heater) and drill some air holes. I never liked the idea of keeping them in a little shoe box but then again I only have 5 snakes. It will end up costing you about the same as a 10 gallon.

I have most of my larger ratsnakes (including my largest corn) in 50 gallon sterilite containers. I got them for $10 each. Talk about a LOT of space for my $$$$. And once you get into the bigger cages, plastic is SO much easier to clean (for me, especially, since I carry it upstairs from the basement and take it outside to hose it out for starters). I still have some of my snakes in glass aquaria, and they look great. But next time I find 50 gallon Sterilites at Super Wal*Mart...I'm buyin' more!

I know alot of breeders who use rubbermaid containers. obviously small ones for small snakes and large for large snakes. when i have a new snake to quarentine i put them in one. what i do is buy the right size if i dont already have one. and i have a soddering gun and poke holes in the 4 sides. some people like to drill holes but i think its too sharp for babies and the soddering gun makes the edges rounded. if you want a rubbermaid cage set up... you can get some with or make some with heat tape. from home depot or a hardware place. you need a tight fitting lid. even putting a phone book or bricks on top. im sure someone has a set-up and they will send a pic. but thats MY 2 cents.

I found a solution for the loose area in the middleof the top.

What are those that are holding down the middle of the sides?

Those are Four Paws brand clips for the screen tops used on aquariums. The ones pictured are for 55gal. tanks. They are upside down. You can use smaller ones on the smaller boxes.

But won't an UTH melt the rubbermaid plastic?. Where can I get heat tape and how does it work? Where's the best place to get both the rubbermiads and the heat tape?

repzoo44 Mar 29, 2006 11:59 PM

you can get the rubbermaids or sterlite containers at target, lowes, home depot........I think the bean farm sells heat tape and a few others I cant think of right now. You basically just hook the wires from the heat tape into a thermostat. Ive never done it but it looks easy enough. there are a couple of sites that have step by step instructions on how to set it up. You must use a thermostat so it wont get too hot and melt the containers. In the racks the heat tape doesnt actually come into direct contact with the container I dont think.

If it can melt the plastic it would be too hot for your animal as well. So, no, they don't melt the plastic unless something is very wrong. Now a light bulb.....melt and burn in a heart beat.

I buy all my heat tape and stuff for it at The Bean Farm. Wire a dimmer switch into an extension cord and you have your own rheostat. Rubbermaids....Walmart.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

Okie cool, thanks for the insight. I wish I knew what a Bean Farm was lol. I guess those aren't in the NE Fl/ SE Ga area. I looked at the hardware stores for heat tape. Is it supposed to look like a black cable that you use heat-resistant tape to tape to the bottom of the tank? Because thats what I saw and it had its own thermostat attached. Is that what I should be looking for? I found all the rubbermaids and Sterilites. I liked the latter styles as opposed to the rubbermaids, but didn't buy anything yet.

try the internet for the bean farm.lol. the heat tape is very similar to the under tank heaters. you can also get them at reptile shows if there is any near you. My rack system I bought. It was pre assembled and had the heat tape and thermostat connected. The heat tape is on the back wall, that way only one side of the container gets warm and the snakes have a cooler end to go to.
Here is where I bought my racks from
