Tail Regeneration

reddragon01 Mar 30, 2006 07:02 AM

New to this forum, I just came into possession of a young CWD in bad shape. His worst problem is his tail, it is in horrible shape due to incomplete sheds, the old skin (multiple layers)is constricting the last 50% or so. I have done multiple soaks, both in plain water, as well as water mixed with shed aid, with limited results. My question is, do CWD's regenerate their tails if broken? I've done a search on this forum without finding an answer. I'm afraid of septicemia setting in due to necrosis of the tail, so if the tail will regenerate, it may be better to snap it and let it grow back. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I have heard that they will grow back, but this has not been my experience. I got Charlize two and a half years ago, from PetSmart, lol, and her tail was broken in several places. A good portion broke off shortly after I got her, and she still has a "kink" where there is another break.

At this point in time, a strange little nub has grown back, but that is about it. Have you tried soaking the tail in a product such as "Shed Eze" or something comparable???

Keep up the warm tub soaks, and gently massage the tail to encourage the old sheds to loosen up, if s/he will tolerate it.

In juvies tails may grow back quite nicely but uniformly brown coloured. The older the animal gets, the less well do tails regenerate-if at all.
