Gently stretch the tail out straight and look at it from the side. Find the vent, which is where the tail starts. A male's tail tapers slowly from the vent and is more than half as thick at the midpoint (from vent to tip) as at the base of the tail. A female's tail tapers more quickly and is less than half as thick at the midpoint (from vent to tip) as at the base of the tail.

This procedure is more reliable with adults than with juveniles. Check snakes of known sex before trying it with snakes of unknown sex. With experience, an accuracy rate of around 90% is possible. OTOH, probing produces an accuracy rate of 95% or better.
