BOX TURTLE EGGS....QUESTIONS PLEASE...

sallie_keeper Jul 29, 2003 02:01 AM

SO COOL..AFTER MONTHS..and MONTHS of waiting, My
3-toed boxie girl laid her eggs today.. 4 total.. Sadly she crushed the first 2 almost immediately.. the 3rd is sunken in..(i plan to dry it out and take a look inside)

BUT the 4th is PERFECT.. Now the hard part (and I thought waiting was bad).. I have the egg in a plastic container, with damp vermiculite, temp gage inside container, and outside on top of it..

THE ROOM TEMPERATURE RIGHT NOW IS 86 f..

IS THIS TOO HOT OR TOO COLD??

WHAT IS THE HUMIDITY LEVEL NEEDED??

HOW DO I ADD WATER TO THE VERMICULITE.. WITHOUT DISTURBING THE EGG??

HOW LONG DO THE EGGS TAKE TO HATCH??

I will do LOTS of reading tonight, and fix what ever I didn't get..

MORE Questions later..
Thanks..

HARPY

The third egg that is "sunken in", may be fine, don't write it off, and don't open it as long as it might be good. For the time being, until someone can answer your question more thoroughly, put both eggs in a damp environment (nested in some damp paper towels). I've dug up several eggs that had dents in them and they filled out once I put them in damp vermiculite and in some cases, lightly misted them.
Try not to rotate the eggs, keep the side you found "up", "up" if possible. Back later

I dont know how the momma turtle could have crushed the eggs.. I've never heard of that before..
the egg with the indent is probly fine, all 3 of my eggs have indents in them and it looks as though the embyos are growing
I have my eggs at 83 degrees F, anything above 86 could turn out with deformed hatchlings, 70's to mid 80's is good temp range
as for humidity I have mine around 90%,
good luck!

>>>I dont know how the momma turtle could have crushed the eggs.. I've never heard of that before..

Oddly enough, the momma turtle did NOT dig any holes to lay the eggs in.. She practiced for weeks digging the right size..but nothing when come time to having the eggs.. The first two eggs where laid over the side of her hide box.(SHE WAS ON TOP OF IT) and the eggs were clawed up by her.. I THINK SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS DIGGING?? TRYING TO COVER UP THE EGGS...

The sunken in egg is cut at the end..but the yoke did not run out like the others did.. I will keep it moist until it looks rotten..but doubt if it will live..

thanks
