I dont live by you, but I have seen a few critters around here. First few of the year for me and it has been in the high 60s here alot. I have seen some Brown snakes and some Wall lizards already. Its kinda cool that stuff is out already. Hey, what are the laws in PA on those spotted salamanders? I made a deal for 4 of them last year and the guy ripped me off. Havent seen any at a reasonable price since. If its legal, you want to trade something for a few? Once it gets a little warmer, I can get alot of different critters. I usually just take pictures, but you know how it is, sometimes a critter or two makes it home. Like last spring when I found a albino leopard frog. That guy came home. Still got him too. Anyways, I need to get off here, Later.
Wall Lizards-really you must be in SE PA then. I'd love to see one! Albino Leopard Frog-woah-very cool!!! Brown snakes are hard to find here too-the Northern Brown(Dekay) but I find Red-Bellied Browns just north of here.
Okay the current PA law says you can't sell or trade in any PA herps. BUT you can catch 2 and keep them. (that might change if they have their way in Harrisburg-keep checking the Fish and Boat Comm. website on that.) That website has all the current laws on it too. Spotted have already migrated as far north as Monroe County (it was on TV March 7th I think-the park closed it roads for the thousands crossing the road and if anyone tried to get through they got some nasty fines-which was a pretty cool thing for the park to do)after they migrate, they get hard to find. Should it rain-anytime soon-you might have a chance to find a few still at night if it's still cold enough.
Just one note on them-I think they are hard to keep-they have to be kept so cold or they just die. In the 70's I tried to keep them and the only way was in the fridge-where they did very well. But that was my experience in keeping them along time ago-I haven't bothered since.
I've pretty much given up on collecting animals-just photos now-too many people keep giving their unwanted herps (but that's a subject for another forum!) But I still love to go out and find local things to photograph and it lets me know that the eco system isn't being destroyed by all this developement going on.
Too chatty-I'll shut up now-sorry.
Im actually in Kansas, so thats why I ask. I have found a Tiger salamander here in the past, but its been a few years. We have the wall lizards all over here. Almost every mulch bed around the college and surrounding neighborhoods. Thats cool on the spotteds, Ill keep checking the classifieds for some. Later
I went out today for a little bit and found Bull Frogs, Red back salamanders and a bunch of spring peepers. That was the first time I came across Spring Peepers and their chorus was amazing!
